Hello Tim.
Load up a song with a synth in it. Now, as the song is playing, grab the filter level with your mouse and move it up and down as the synth is playing so that you get a nice dynamic effect on the sound.
What you just did is manually change a parameter. Now, if you have a sequencer track for a device (by default, instruments create them) and you did the SAME thing with the record button on, it would record your changes as automation.
Any device in reason can be automated, but be sure to create a sequencer track for it first, then hit record, and fiddle with the knobs as you please.
