let's say you have a 32 channels mixer.
let's say you are an octopus (u have 8 active hands)

and let's say you want :
fader 1 to fade in [needs one hand]
fader 2 fade out [needs one hand]
effect 1 play sinus [needs one hand]
effect 2 crossfade with effect 3 [needs 2 hands]
fader 4 play sawtooth wave, in fading way [1 hand]
pan of channel 12 go left-right in some speed [ 1 hand]
and the mic channel fade in [ one , last hand]
------------------------------------------------------
and let's say you can control all this simultaneously , then it is ok,
you don't need automation.

but when at this time you need in addition
to fade master in/out....
you're in trouble

this is what automation for.
you record faders/controller's motion in additional parameter channel, and they go as u say, by themselves.

boom.
