Automating delay feedback

Okay so I've been working for a few hours trying to automate the feedback of a delay so it builds up across 2 bars.

The delay is on an aux channel through a bus from the source. I've got a compressor on there to help it minimize overloading.

I've tried automating the feedback, automating the send amount, and automating the threshold of the compressor. its pretty hard to get the feedback exactly right so that it doesn't overload

I know its just a case of tweaking it until its right, but is there a good practice of doing this?

id just set the feedback at 95 or 100% and then just automate the volume. what DAW are you using?           --

Only thing you must do is bounce the automation. Put the feedback around 90/100 percent then bounce the audio file, when done use fade-in or fade-out to adjust the delay.

But you have a lot of ways to do this.

Automate the volume of the delay plugin thats the easiest way to do it.           Free album out now:

you don't need to set feedback at 100%, I'm not sure right now but it must be around 50-60% .. I think 55 or 58% and there is the point where you get an endless delay. Than you can automate the feedback or volume or both.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

ive found automating delays tricky as well one thing i have done is bounced down the delay about 8 bars or whatever going from quiet to fullout feedback. then pick a loop of a nice section of it like 4 beats or something and loop it then automate the volume going from quiet to loud. it creates a nice sharp drop when it ends sound trippy.

Bounce the delay and normalize it.
Stable and on sync

automating the volume of the delay channel will give you a different result than automating the feedback (especially if your synthline is still playing). i usually just modulate the feedback. 50% is a good starting point to give you long delays, when using the delay as a send with 100% wet. more will make it overload over time and less will make it dissipate sooner.

one thing i'll sometimes do to a lead that's supposed to stop playing (but that would miss from the track if it isn't replaced by something equally powerful) is gradually raising the send of the delay and raising the feedback to about 60% for the last few notes, then to 50% as it stops playing and gradually reducing the feedback to zero over the next bars while raising the reverb. that makes for a smooth transition to a quieter section.

In Logic Pro 54% Feedback gets the wet effect in a steady level. Anything above that and the delay lines progressively start getting louder and more distorted ala Roland Space Echo. So you need to automate the mix fader as well to get everything sounding smooth.
