automating a hardware synth

This is for logic users but am sure it could be for aznyone who knows.
Currently running a Nord Lead rack 2x into my RME Fireface 400 Midi IN of synth to Out of interface and vice versa
All is working as should. can record midi notation in, hear it play back etc.
My Q is on Automation. This is the first time running a synth MIDI so quite a learning curve ahead.
I cant get myl MIDI tracks cc numbers to reflect/ equal and control those of the Nord... There are no names reflecting my Nords parameters i.e cutoff, resonance, LFO 1 etc. In the |MIDI track automation lanes i get names such and controller lanes such as as (Ctrl14, ctrl 15, General 1, General 2, Vibrato, Sestuento, Omni on, poly off etc_there are 127 of them)
Now if i record in i can automate from the nord and see data being written onto the nord midi channel however if i go into the lane to try find that automation there is nothing there and the names dont reflrct any of the nords parameters.Upon closer inspection it looks like a new track is recorded on top of the MIDI track which i can move around independently in the arrange seperated from the MIDI notation track i wrote using my keyboard. Strange? if i click into it it opens the piano roll but no data is there as it is supposed to be automation.
Thenm i tried the write/ read way of controlling the parameters from the nord but nothing!! No automation changes at all. Cant hear any automation and cant see any automation.
I can alays just record it in but then i have to be very precise as i cant edit it incasew i dont get a part right as i cant redraw anything already put down.
Sorry for the long post. Hopingsomeone can help me get my MIDI tracks CC names to match and automate those of my Nords.

it is normal that logic records incoming cc-data in new regions as hyperdraw. you can see what cc-channel it is when you select the region and open the event editor.
but the easiest way is defenately to get a premade nord environment layer

checkout the manual, there should be a mapping of all MIDI CC assigned.
probably SysEx messages are used, too (quite common on devices with more than 127 parameters).
check your sequencer's setup options, if they get filtered (...)!

No logic AU support yet and they are still unsure of when this will be available

I must admit i did not look into the event editor on the region but only the key editor and also into hyperdraw which unfortunately only showed me the regular hyperdraw settings like velocity, pan etc.. Maybe this is where i went wrong.

I have asked around a few other forums for a Nord Rack 2X environment but no response as yet. Seems people are hesitant to release theirs should they have managed to make their own.. Fairplay though as i am sure it is not an easy task and must have taken some time to create. i believe this is kind of what Realtime was getting at?
I am going to relook at it tonight and see if i can somehow figure it out.

there is a shortcut to switch between all used hyperdraw commands, this would lead you directly to it...but sadly I dont remember the shortcut anymore  lol

dont know if they got a nordrack 2x environment there tough. sometimes also the companies got environments for download at there page, like access for example. dont know about clavia.

Very very hard to find. The only one i managed to find was one for the Modular. Anyhow. I am in the process of setting up my own and have found a solution to the automation workaround where i can convert my recorded region data either to track automation to edit in the controller lanes (CC names still dont reflect those of Nord but think this is normal as there is no way to change them) or like you said i could automate the regions in the Hypereditor (again CC names dont reflect but got this little hack programme where you rename all the CC controller names in the Hypereditor to reflect those on the Nord so this is probably going to be myroute)
I am setting up an environment where the 4 Part MIDI is on 4 channels (1-4) with 1 extra global channel (16) for all performance bank & Performance patch changes (dont know why these need to be done on a global channel but you cant do a performance change on the normal 4 MIDI channels?) also i have edited all the patch names and banks (14x99 which includes all programs, kits and performances)) to be able to be changed/ selected from within Logic which makes it easy to browse patches and banks without touching the nord and also again easy for any programme changes.
When this is done i am happy to share it with whoever is interested.

I guess but have been in contact with the people at Rekon and they have no idea when Au will be available. I do have FX pansion and typically does work well but i have a few VST's which do not so i see this as a bit more risky.
Also i am sure the Rekon VST will be an .exe file to setup and us folk on Macs cant use these

You can do this methode to automated ANY midi enabled hardsynth in Logic.
1- Do a live automation on Nord
2- capture the last take(keycommand)
3- (optional) you can name the new region after the parameter you tweaked( No this region doesn't supposed to have notes in it:)
4- Expand/Magnify your automation region in arrange to do further tweaks till you are happy.
5- (optional/recommended)Select both the note and automation regions and merge them together(keycommand)

V.2 is available for a while now they just haven't updated site. They sent me the manuals etc and was about to purchase right before i realised Logic was not a tested platform yet.. |
