Hi guys, ive been reading lots of forums about studio acoustics, and everyone seems to go for the diy thing (which i dont have time for) or 'gik' acoustics cause they arent so expensive. From my part money is not the issue and the only type of acoustics ready made i can buy from my country (malta) are auralex products.

Are their products not so good cause they dont give the same acoustic control as 'gik's products, or are they as good as gik's but are far more expensive? , which reason is it?, everyone seems to avoid auralex and i want to know why since i dont have much options here.

I have the Auralex mopads and they are great.
Can't comment about their full size solutions, no experience with it.

i got thwm too and i share your opinion , i find it hard to believe that theyre expensive and good for nothing to be honest, lots of studios seem to be having their stuff installed.

I doubt they are bad its just that they are overpriced as they are considered market brand leader, you can buy gik acoustics or real traps for cheaper and better performance at the price.           "Whoever said the best things in life are free... obviously grew their own bud"

I understand thanks , the only prob is that shipping costs from the uk to malta are staggering! so im far better off going for the auralex stuff cause in the end cost will turn out to be nearly the same. This morning i came to know that there is an auralex re-seller here and i can test all the room bundles for myslef in different rooms set up in this shop, whicjh is cool .

I have x1 balcony door and a window at the back of my room, do you know if curtains of a certain type of material would make a difference, and the color?, i know it will only help for the highs but its still better than leaving the window and balcony door unvovered,i will also have bass traps in the corners at the back aswel so it wont be that bad.

It´s not that auralex sucks per se....
But you would only get a fairly decent regulation of the high and midrange. Forget about foam products having decent absorbtion coefficients below 300 (which is the area the most critical to control) To absorb low freq´s you need mass.

For the same money (possibly less) i would build my own panels for the walls and superchunk traps for the corners using readily available high mass fiberglass (construction batts from rockwool)

The downside is more work for you and it sucks even more if you like me can´t hit a nail in a turd without breaking both The end result though is a much more proper way of dealing with acoustics on a budget. As for the balcony door, glass is almost transparent when it comes to low frequencies and some sort of heavy curtain is in most cases enough to avoid reflections. Alternatively you could put panels in front of the door on gobo stands so you can move them out of the way when needing access to the balcony           Mastering available here:
