Audio Preview stops working in Cubase 4.

i posted this in the cubase.net and didnt get a good response... figured i might as well try here, couldnt hurt - maybe someone ran across this issue.
been using cubase 4 for about 2 weeks. at some point of work, without triggering anything in particular... the audio preview stops working. the samples play but no sound is heard.... same goes for mediabay. even more strange is that once the preview goes "kaput"... even when its saved, it opens up the next time without the ability to hear the audio preview.
the only solution we have is to copy the project to a new directory... that seems to work, but then it goes kaput again at some seemingly random point.
note that we do not have the 'control room' on, so the preview should be going to the main bus.
the tracks in the project play 100%, the vst's do as well.
if anyone came across this issue please aid.

I had very similiar problems with Nuendo 3. And its only the 'preview' functions, sound was ok otherwise. Would have to restart Nuendo. Luckily it did'nt persist after restarting.
Sounds like your bug might be an extension of this  |

control room is disabled to begin with which means (according to the manual) that audio should be coming from the main bus...

it seems to be a bug colin... i would advise many to wait until 4.02 or 4.1X

from my replies at the steinberg forum i gather that this seems to be a bug a whole bunch of people are getting... kinda sucks.
thinking of going back to sx3 for now...
