hello all :] .i need some help resolving audio latency in my Cubase .when i load for example Absynth 3.0 and play a key the sound response come approx. in one second (!) but when i use Absynth as a standalone module the audio response is far better.
i have:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird @ 1Ghz [with Win2000 Professional running]
384 ram
SB Live! 128 [using kX audio drivers]
Riva TNT2 AGP 32 ram
and a 10/100 networking card
i searched around a little and found this http://sound-on-sound2.infopop.net/2/OpenTopic?q=Y&a=tpc&s=215094572&f=351097254&m=150108472&p=1 link in one thread here. i read that thread and downloaded the Ulysses utility. here http://img98.exs.cx/img98/8085/ulysses2te.jpg is a screenshot of Ulysses when i run Cubase SX + Absynth. its all pretty normal but the interrupts and ram avail is bit high. tho i read the prog help and some infos but still dont fully understand the interrupts and realtion of it to audio latency so dunno if it might be caused by that... any suggestions are appreacited ;]

new era scientist. well this latency problem occured just recently... i have sb live! for some time and never had long latency response like now, so i guess it isnt the problem with card... maybe cause i added some hardware and its slowing my pc thus the latency occurs.
however i was thinking about buying new card and also some other musical equipment. what would you suggest as "amateur" audio card. something not too expensive... ;] |

i am using all midi outputs. when i use some of the emulated midi ports the latency still occurs... um what makes the differece using emulated port? |

two points from no big expert.
1. 384 MB of ram just doesnt sound like enough, a minumum of 512 and a gig is definatly preffered.
2. the sound card. my emu-1820 broke and i reverted to the onboard soundcard. performance droped drasrically. i know that an SB is a dedicated sound cad but it's still not able to take off a lot of the load.
good luck tal

If latency is low in standalone mode then the soundcard is fine. End of. Don't get confused with interrupts etc. as this is very likely to be absolutely irrelevant in your case. Also while 384MB RAM is not really enough to easily make music, it is possible and should not affect performance if you're only using a few plugins and audio tracks.
My guess is that you are not using the ASIO driver in SX. Go to the audio setup window and check which driver is selected. If the ASIO driver IS in use, go to the soundcard control panel while SX is running and check that the latency/buffer settings are correctly set.

im using the same amount of RAM as you - and would probably have the same problems using standard sound card drivers.
do a search for ASIO4ALL - its a free ASIO driver that can be used with almost any sound card - use that driver instead. Your latency will go down to about 45ms. Works fine for me.

Colin. i opened Devices->Device Setup->VST Multitrack and the ASIO driver was set to normal ASIO Multimedia driver with input latency 110ms and output 750 [just a side question.... input latency means the time in which the audio device response to key hit and output the time till i hear the sound?]. I tried to change to kX ASIO driver but get error. With ASIO DirectX FullDuplex driver i get better with output latency [46ms] but input get higher [417ms].
i checked the buffers setting in my kX audio panel. heres some data.
tank memory size: 256kb
playback buffer size: 8352bytes (~8.70ms)
recording buffer size: 16384bytes
number of AC3 buffers: 4
GSIF buffer size: 256 samples
...i couldnt make anything from it but i guess only those first two matters :]

thanks for advice illusions ;] .i installed ASIO4ALL and latency in Cubase dropped to 13ms for input and also 13ms for output. |

Input latency is the time it takes for sound to actually get inside SX from when it's presented to the input; output latency is the time it takes to hear eg. a synth sound after you press a key. SX2 has a known bug which means it doesn't correctly handle soundcards with differing input and output latencies, resulting sometimes in misaligned recorded audio and MIDI... but that isn't your issue!
ASIO drivers written specifically for your soundcard should give you the best performance; if the KX drivers give you an error I would suggest reinstalling them or looking for other drivers. ASIO4ALL can also be a good solution if all else fails.

if all else fails? you mean ASIO4ALL are not that good choice? |
