weird, its a bit expensive for a controller, anyways will make you very satisfied imao IF you have a DECENT pair of monitors aside a DECENT interface...
why dont you go for the SPL crimson? it easily eats most interfaces that pricerange ..... if money isnt an issue iŽd rather think about really good monitors, good interface and buy controller after... where SPL anyways is with the best choice you can make.... if money is an issue, id go for the crimson as its a very decent interface for those bucks with a typical SPL quality monitor controller aside....

Not exactly
You need a sound card for you computer system to transform the digital (computer) signal to output an analogue signal. Luckily, almost all home systems come with an internal sound card, so you'll be able to hear something
But, you'll only hear as good and with as much detail as the DA (digital - analogue) converters of the sound card let you (and a bunch of other techy things). If you get decent DA converters, you'll end with with a decent sound
And on the plus side, a better sound card will dramatically lower your latency and increase system responsiveness, being able to perform a heck of a lot more tasks than with your internal card.
Also, it provides more I/O options for you to connect pretty much any gear to your computer that doesn't have a USB connection.
That said, I'd rather invest in any sound card (especially RME-related) than a monitor controller.. less then half the price and way more gain in your studio
Also, I prefer feeding the signal into a mixing table, and plugging the monitors directly into the table - maybe I could benefit from a monitor controller (almost twice the price of my monitors ), but feature-wise the mixing table allows me to do so much more routing wise, and still have a great effect modulating the tone along the way (while bringing in some warmth to the ending result).
But if you got a lot of money, maybe take out the big guns and get a high end AD/DA converter - but this is way over what I can help you with

chromatic, its probably good if you do some reading about basic studio set-ups, first inform yourself before you splash out money. your questions are very basic. a good rule of thumb when it comes to spending your budget is; first good computer, then monitors (or acoustic treatment even before that) then soundcard. there are tons of threads here about every subject i mentioned. good luck and enjoy.
