Audio Hijack Pro _ cant get it to work?

OK, i must be missing something as i cant get any audio ripped from a vlc video i am watching using Audio Hijack Pro, which i got after seeing it recommended here on Isra.
Any record option in audio hijack is showing no level signals.App i am using is VLC Media player (perhaps i need anotheer player?) I have a RME FF400 (do i need to change my audio settings to get it to record in using the onboard card?)
Tried all the different input settings choices i.e. Default system input, built in line, built in Mic (this works but is shit and tiny) and also my rme.
If any one is using this app regularly without problems could you please give me a quick crash course on how to make it work?
All recordings come out blank.
Any idea where i am going wrong?

1. open any app that you want to record the audio from.
2. open Audio Hijack
3. select input (in your case select, Source Type: App. from the drop down menu, then select VLC, if its not in the menu you might have to goto "other App. -> select App. then find VLC in your App. folder and select it)
4. select recording type , i use custom and choose AIFF @ 24bit
5. hit Hijack
so if you done all that properly , and you have VLC playing something you should see the level meters (in Audio Hijack) showing signal ...
then hit record and bobs your uncle
works fine, every time
