I´ve had this problem for a while now. whenever i try to create an audio sample from a vst, it doesnt come out exactly as it was on the instrument. this happens almost everytime I record something. especially when I use the instrument´s delay.
i use cubase. is there any other exporting technique that i could use so the sound would stay as i wanted it when composing?
could this be a problem since i dont hav a professional soundboard?
any help is very welcome
peace

How different?

How are you recording?

What soundcard do you have?

The instruments delay or any delay?

There will always be some difference between bounced and out of the box sounds due to the different bit rates unless you are bouncing at 32bit, however, if you have a less than 'pro' SC you shouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Are you bouncing, freezing or recording to another track?

I've had similar problems when mixing down vst-i.
I can create a 32 bit file but (if I've got this right) the wav file is rendered through my 16bit SBLive! and lots of low end frequencies are not captured properly (as the card only supports 16bit 48kHz and below).

I notice the difference when using 32bit effects too, the effect seems to "sit below" the dry signal. The vst that has been recorded seems to lack the depth or warmth of the live instrument when compared. Multi band compression can help a bit, but if the card doesn't record the sound, the plug in can't put it back (this is how it seems to me).

I guess we just need a decent soundcard to capture the VST instruments correctly (anyone got a spare RME system they want to send me??).

If you export the file in the right way, the soundcard should not be involved in any way. Using effects like delay shouldn't be a problem either - I speak from my experiences with Logic, so if this isn't true for Cubase, sorry

- When exporting audio, the audio-file itself is "replicated" neatly avoiding effects. This is handy, if you need the audio in a different format or so.

- When "bouncing" the sound is played back realtime, and "recorded" (rendered would be a more acurate term) to disk - this way effects are included.

See if you can in some way choose to bounce instead of exporting. I never had any problems bouncing something from a VSTi synth, but maybe it depends on the synth...? I'm not sure, but I think it really doesn't, since the actual output (what you hear) is sent to disk and speakers, instead of just speakers. I bounced succesfully from Absynth, Attack and some dodgy plugins with no problems.

I don't know if this helps, but I think (think!) it's safe to say, that you can rest assured with regards to soundcard - that should cause NO problems Bounce instead of export, that is probably the key...

Have you tried to record using an external recorder as opposed to expoting?           http://soundcloud.com/djkiva

As far as I can tell, this may be only a cubase problem.

It happens with every plug in I use (exporting the track and importing it back as a wav is all done through the export audio button on the main vst master mixer. This is also the only way I know of bouncing audio tracks in vst, but if there are other ways, I'd be glad to learn).

I've used fruity loops once and Rebirth for a while before I got Cubase. Both of these programs produced great mixes (but with too limited editing for my needs), but cubase always sounds strange.

I have no external recorder (yet) but I am looking at getting a Carillion System with rme card & Powercore DSP. I'll be using Cubase (SX v2 instead of my current v5.1) which should have no problems

As for LFO's, some of the tracks do have lots and some don't, the parameters only change when I make them (now I sound like "Lord of the MIDI" )

The sound change is similar to a Band pass filter being applied, with only a certain range of frequencies being recorded (I thought that this was a result of 24bit audio being rendered by my soundcard onto my hard drive).

I'd love to be able to just transfer all my song info into Logic, but I installed it once and it scared me!

thanx a lot for the replys guys.
the way i export my audio is through export audio mixdown. i´ve seen this "bounce" in logic but i dont think u have that choice in cubase. i´m going to try re-installing logic and pasting my song in there should be no problem, next i´ll try this bouncin technic. i guess then i´ll know if it´s soundboard problem or whatever
good luck on your RME psymantics,
i guess it should be a matter of months till i get my soundboard. peace yall.

I'm such an idiot!!! This seems to make a difference, I was not using the UV22 for "bouncing" or exporting plug-in's back into cubase, only for the final mixdown file (Cubase's manual confused me by not mentioning that the UV22 should be used on ALL audio, not just the final mixdown!!).

Cheers dude!!
