hey kids!

question: if i'm only going to be recording a couple of samples and writing my songs with software, do i really need a nifty sound card?  would a creative labs work fine?

hey, uncle !
when you do a digital audio processing you want the digital domain to be as wide as possible in order to get less clipping and more precise calculations, therefore you need the best audio interface, in order to make all the effects in better quality than the CD quality.
besides you maybe use other than CD media (DAT for example)
besides nifty audio cards have nifty A->D and D->A converters, which make your recordings better.

besides "nifty" is relative - the PC today is so fast that you almost don't need things like pulsar or luna, so you only need audio recording/playing back interface - RME hammerfall/Midiman Delta etc. which don't cost far from the "brand new creative sblive audigy"...
so do your thinking :)
