Need help!
I'm trying to get some "floaty" long held atmospheric sounds, kind of similar to what protoculture often uses. I've been using synths like FM7 and absynth 3 with heaps of reverb to get such sounds, but I just wanted to hear people's opinions on how they do it. I'd also like to know how to control the texture of the sound over time, so I can get a kind of sheeeeoooouuuuuu sound.
Hope at least someone understands what I'm talking about!

I think i know what u mean:
Drag that sound in sampler (Kontakt will do), and then loop a part of this file, lets say when the sound gets sustained, or at the moment it releases. Sure thing u can also send it to reverb fx.

What Jeto said will work 2. it's a classic trick. You'll end up with reversed reverb kinda sound, very cool for atmo stuff.

Load some sample on audio editor, reverse it, apply the reverb, reverse again. Classic tip for trance voices, pad etc.

try mixing differnt sounds...one with low freq and the other with higher freq...and then reverberate them slowly(automate)and then delay...it really changes the dimension of sound

All that stuff works great!
Even just taking a normal sound and putting a ridiculous amount of reverb on it (biggest room size + highest reflectivity) creates a really nice atmospheric effect.
Thanks guys.

You should learn Oscillator envelope on some synths that allow this (Reason Malstrom is quite easy for this)

You add envelopes to slowly raise the pitch or other factors, and play a really long note.
Record that, then timestretch it in an audio program.
I make alot of building sounds that way.
Sometimes two minutes long!

or you can get ultra itchy glitchy with it and do some granular synthesis and time strech the shit out of it and get a horror kind of soundtrack.. absynth is great for that.           https://www.djjeto.com

Another thing too - if you want to get a kind of explosive, metallic sounding boom that slowly fades out over a few bars (that you would typically hear at the climax of a buildup) use a white noise oscillator, pass it through a hp filter so your left with just "bassy" noise, envelope it so it slowly fades out and put heaps of reverb on it.

djzed, you probably mean lp filter not hp?

adding some phaser to the noise might work too...
