Guache, first of all ppl say that u need at leat 512 ram cuz of the many vst's, IMO 1GB their is no need for that now, of course it will be good but 512 will do fine.

The processor go for the AMD (its cheaper than pentium) also try to go for the 1700+ XP I heard it is a good processor for overclocking. The only problem with the AMD is the temperature but nothing we can't handle

Overall go for the AMD with more ram and u will be fine, also search this forum for computers, their are loads of previous topics on this - very good to get info from those           "Great things are only possible with outrageous requests." Thea Alexander

AMD processors are better for working on audio stuff... beside its cheaper, so you can buy a 2800+ processor at the same price of a p4 1,8
About memory, try using 512 (or more, of course), 333 mhz DDR.

sse is some calculation-routine in the core...

newer plugs will need it.

--> though the p3 has sse too...so it doesn t matter.

but i believe that the xp has a faster fsb than the p3...a very important thingy too. ( the fsb is the bottleneck on your pc...)

about ram...if u like to use sample-based stuff ( the grand, spectrasonics other romplers....) u need at least 512...

about the speed of zour rams: chk what your mobo can handle before u buy some other stuff. and it must have the same speed as the ones which are already built in !
--> if some 266 mhz are built in 333 mhz aren t worth.

hope u get it...it s somehow in the morning and im a bit 1%#$%.

well, I know AMD is cheaper than pentium. But i don´t have to buy anything. My mother has already both PC´s and she will give me one (OK, it´s a change). So I cannot try to buy neither a 2800+ nor a 1700+. Just the two I wrote above.
Between these two, witch one would you choose?
(RAM is not a problem: I´ll have 512 Mb)
Thanx!!

1gb helps alot, when you load 700mb sample libraries.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
