My problem is which one should i buy and whats this about 2.5 and 3.5 inches how can i find out which one is mine?

The hard drive i have is a 160 maxtor which is Ide (Ata 133) i think....

There are only 2 types of connector (ignoring SCSI interfaces)

ATA (Also known as PATA, Parallel-ATA, IDE)
and
SATA (Serial-ATA)

SATA is a faster interface, but since hard drives don't reach the sustained throughput to saturate the interdace - I haven't noticed any difference. The plugs are nicer though, so go for that

Most motherboards after 2 years ago have a SATA port and all have at least 1 IDE.

SATA don't have jumpers, you configure the boot drive in the BIOS. Makes it much easier.
Otherwise, on a PATA drive, set your main (boot)drive to Master. On the second drive, set this one to slave mode (usually in my experience, this means removing all the jumpers, but check on the disk itself as there is usually a chart)

To see if your motherboard has SATA, it's usually a brightly coloured L shaped lego block.

For audio, pick a hard drive that runs at 7000rpm or faster. Recommend Western Digital or Seagate. But that's my opinion as I work in the world of computers and get to see a lot of dead PCs.

Oh, and finally, you can mix and match SATA with PATA, just use the boot settings in the bios to select your boot order.

Although SATA specs are better, Tomos is right that you don't reach those limits...in most cases you aren't reaching PATA/IDE limits either. The truth is, I've had SATA drives perform worse that IDE before. It often comes down to chipsets used on mobo & the drive. Unless you can find specific reviews for your mobo, bios version, the drive in question, your power supply, & the other devices you have, it really can be a bit of a crap shoot.

The reality is that most drives will perform well in most setups. I've spent hours of drive tweaking, often with very negligable gains, so if it doesn't perform well out of the box, & you've updated the bios & firmware, then you might just want to try a different drive.

In any event, I would suggest the SATA, and I also 2nd recommendation for Western Digital.           Keep The Faith,

i agree with sata 2 but if hes dell had a ide when he bought it probably doesn't have sata2 controllers on board.

for a desktop u go no lower than 7200 and better with 16mb cache.
for a laptop a 5400rpm will do the job.

bwaaaaaaahahahah

yeah, sata 2 is cool. anyways the biggest positive argument for me is the connectors issue, where sata offers the most comfortable ones.

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.
