My friend was studied in music school for 2 years when he visited at my apartment last summer. I did learn shit, but he was just amazed how I can have all these stuff (VST plugins) on my computer that were worth of 50k as hardware which they had at school. I had only waves,sonnox,urs etc. at the moment =) hehe

about schools....
imho, 5 - 8 years of music school (playing an instrument, music theary etc.) is a very good investement of money.
But sound engineering school - imho is waste of money and time. You can learn everything reading and practicing...

look at it this way, when ur joining one of these schools, ur in it for fun! cuz everything and i mean everything can be learned on ur own!

A good combo is to try learn by urself and attend school to get those tips that books doesnt provide
Work on your own proyects and bring em to school to get feedback, work on bigger/better gear etc
Take advantage on schools resources, not just sit and listen the class
