So Im attempting to assemble my own sound system, so far I have 2 big fullrange speakers, and a rackmount amp on the way. What other things should I put on my list? Limiter? EQ? Mixer (besides the dj mixer)? Thanks!

Id like to use it outdoors, for parties, not too big parties. Maybe like 300 people but thats a bit many.
Id like to have a nice amount of bottom end, but the speakers I have now will work for now, the amp I have is a 2000 watt, the speakers are 1300 watts max each, so I know Im gonna need more amps for a bigger system.
What I really want to know is, have I missed something important?

If your amp dont have a limiter it would be a good idea to get one for sure. An EQ is not essential for outdoors, that's more for tuning a rig for the room. If you are just djing you'll manage with a dj mixer, bands with instruments is another story. |

Could it work without a limiter? Thats for avoiding a major speaker-blow, right? is it absolutely essential, to start out with? The amp I have isnt even big enough for my speakers.
Id also like the option of having liveacts play on the system, though I think that they can EQ on their gear.

I'm not an expert on PA, so you might get better advise from someone else.
anyway, an amp thats to small can be just as deadly for speakers because its working under strain and can produce sharp spikes when you are driving your amp hard. You can offcourse use your setup without a limiter, but take your precautions.
Remember to plug in and powering on all your equipment before turning on your amp, and when shutting down, always power off the amp first. Always turn down the volume on the mixer output when rebooting, plugging cables etc. In short, avoid volume spikes going to your amp when it's running.
Maybe check out a PA forum for some expert advice, or talk to a PA firm in your area? |

thanks! You've been a great help. I think what I have will do for now, and Im pretty particular about equipment, very careful, so Im not too worried about that. A limiter will be on my shopping list for the future though.
thanks again! Take care!

Oh, and also turn down the volume on your amp when powering it on and off.
Good luck with your rig and remember earplugs:-) |
