now, when your friends want low-latency sound for making and recording music, you no longer have to tell them to buy an expensive pro-audio soundcard. There is a driver for most built-in sound cards that enables low latency ASIO performance. Best of all its free!
So hook up that midi keyboard and start playing those virtual synthesizers. And you don't need to buy an ASIO soundcard!!!

That is true... but if you aren't planning on using any hardware, it isn't that big of an issue. Also if you are bouncing audio just inside your computer it really isn't as much of an issue either.
The CPU load can easily be dealt with by converting all those CPU hungry softsynths and effects to audio... It also makes you really commit to sounds that you make. You can always re-record those sounds and sometimes the stuff you can do with audio files can be even cooler than using midi alone. Ever try to reverse the sounds that the synth is making just by using midi???
If you are just starting out and don't really intend on playing live out of that computer, it will save you time and money to go that route until you really know that it's time for a sound card. I think that it is incredibly useful for those on tight budgets.

Sure it is, not everyone who wants to play around with some music have the money to buy a asio soundcard when he just starts tweaking.

Currently building a new DAW so still using my shitty ass Sound Blaster Live which I got for $48 like 3 years ago. I pressed a key on a midikeyboard and 1 sec later sound comes out. It was absolutely horrible. ASIO drivers fixed the problem and now its basically instant. Definitely recommended if you have a SHIT card and can't buy a new one yet.
For Soundblasters, check KX-Project ASIO drivers. |
