I've never really seen this discussed but as I'm moving more toward producing work, I'm curious as to how pseudonyms have been chosen or if they're even necessary?
I rarely in the trance scene & psy scene see personal names, unlike a lot of other EDM.
I reckon I'd just find it easier to release under my real name or initials.

NASA has a department that is called Martian Arts.
Its basically beautiful pictures of the universe.
+ Its one of my favorite Tristan tracks
Disco Hooligans was a term used by the media in the mid 90s to describe party goers in the psychedelic trance scene. But yeah, names don't matter much, its the music that counts.
Joti, Tristan use their real names.

I guess its just a fun thing to do as an artist. i mean, you spend all that time creating the music so its almost natural for the artist to want create a pseudonym as well. i must say though, i am always intrigued by psy artist using his own name instead of a pseudonym ie: Mark van der Vlugt... i always dug that one. or Dominic Lamb etc. |

SMS = Stop Making Sense
Stop Making Sense = Concert Movie from Talking Heads (favourite of mine), presenting a visual approach for a live show. As for press info, this movie was one of the first to use digital recording technology.

The name Upavas was given to me by OSHO in the 80s, my full name is Paritosh Upavas. Paritosh can be translated as Contentment and Upavas means Coming Close To Ones True Self!
So it is my real name, as everybody I know calls me Upavas... since I was 13...

if i see a real name instead of a pseudonym on a flyer i immediately think "oh no, they booked another crappy minimal act". this prejudice is based on experience, but on the other hand, can someone really be expected to make creative music when he (like all the other producers from different genres) simply uses his real name instead of a creative artist name? |

I spent a long time thinking about the name I wanted to have, as stupid names are something of a pet peeve for me. I wanted it to be a name that no one else had, that was short and easy to remember/spell, and that had a personal association for me. Oh, and not have Psy in it.
a Tasp (my artist name) is a fictional device from the science fiction work of Larry Niven's Known Space universe (particularly Ringworld, one of my favorite books ever), though it has a bit of a backstory...
in the future, people can spend ~$1000 to get a wire installed in their head that trickles down to the pleasure center of their brain. A 'droud' is attached to the top of their skull and this droud has a cord that can be plugged into the wall.
So, you just plug yourself into the wall and you get 100% pure pleasure for pennies.
However, the pleasure is so pure that it is incredibly addictive and most of the people who get the surgery plug themselves in and do nothing else but that and eventually die.
Fast forward a couple hundred years and this is no longer something that people do, because all of those people who did have bred themselves out of the population.
However, an alien species has developed technology that can be used to activate a Hominid's brain's pleasure center from a distance.
Unlike being plugged into the wall for days at a time this is not a sustained flooding of the brains pleasure center. It is a microburst of intense oneness with the universe, peace, bliss...
This device, which wirelessly transfers pure pleasure, is called a Tasp
That concept reminds me of experiences I've had on the dancefloor, those moments when just for a second you're swooped up by emotion or connection or whatever you want to call it and you are completely blissed out...
If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Darn so much attention to appearances and meanings, when it has nothing to do with music. Music should not be marketing, neither should it have any association with it.
That said, an artist name is good in order to identify who made the tune or who's playing. And, apart from using a sequential identifier number (which would be hard to memorize: "hey, 5135663 is playing!"), your name (what people actually call you) is the best way to identify yourself.
Don't over think this, there's no point. Just make music.

My artist name Gay Satanic Hippie actually came from a fight with darktrance lovers here on Isratrance like 8 years ago when that whole dark thingy started.
Anyways, there was some discussion about dark trance, and I had recently gone to a dark trance party that was populated by 90% men with long fuzzy beards and bad personal hygene that didnt dance but shake spastically as if they were praising Satan.
So I commented that all dark trance lovers were like Gay Satanic Hippies, and they got really upset about that. My friend Dave saw that post and as a joke we started DJing together as the Gay Satanic Hippies. But then organizers of parties where we Djed told us that they always had so many requests from people who wanted to know what GSHs are, and people just came to parties to see what a GSH is. So apparently the name struck a chord.
Fast forward a few years, we have long stopped Djing together, but when I started making music I remembered that name and the attention it always caused, and I thought it fits my weird music style really well. And thats why I chose this name
And check the reactions to my Ektoplazm release, the name still does its trick when it comes to catching the attention, which is what all first-time producers want

There were lots of funny posts regarding the name on Ektos Facebook page as well, but I cant find them, its been a while.
