Being someone that runs a label wouldn't you agree that it's a bad thing since it makes artists harder to follow.

If someone is like, hey I like artist X, but sees their side project name Y, which they don't know it's the same person, they wouldn't jump on that chance to listen to/buy music from someone they liked. Sure the styles could be different, but I know there's a lot of people who like Crazy Astronaut because they know it's Furious producing-and you can hear the similarities. A change in bpm or genre doesn't mean the person changed their entire production style.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I think it is a good idea for a producer to use different names for different projects and having every name staying true to one style.

If one dont want to do so but instead do different styles under one name, sure ,that works to.

Dont see any right or wrong here ,up to the producer.

I see good opinions there. I personally am going to release any bpm/style music under Overdream until it sounds psychedelic. That's simple, but that's simple with psychedelic. If I go making minimal techno, blues or acid jazz I'm not sure it would be a nice idea to release it under Overdream alias (besides, we already have another Overdream, a metal band. Might be a real mess for someone).

As for branding this is actually something to consider, because nowdays there is such a big number of psychedelic acts it is hard to memorize even favourite ones. Especially when you are drunk.

Yeah it's definitely up to the producer to do whatever they want, it just gets confusing (like makus said, especially when you're drunk) . I can't even keep track of which acts are duos of people at parties that I'm throwing, let alone solo acts lol           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

when it comes to one genre, having one project name is appropriate in my opinion.

Lets say psytrance as a broad and open genre: I believe and through personal observation, I have noticed that for projects that have different names for different styles, people still say oh yeah this chill project is of that same XYZ project....

Now here the XYZ project is obviously what this producer is better known as because people have related to him/her with this name XYZ...

No matter how many different names XYZ project brings out for various other styles of the same genre, when people find out its a side project of XYZ, they will most often still call all other sub projects as a 'side project of XYZ'... basically having that other side project names will almost be nullified....

The only time I'd use a different name would be if I wanted to make some pop music to score some extra cash on the side and didn't want my trance friends thinking I wasn't cool.

Yup this exactly my thoughts on the matter... if you are completely changing your style to fit another genre then a name change is cool, but if it is within the same general genre then it's fine to keep the same name.

Yeah, I just discovered it myself as a result of YouTube surfing. Looked it up after I read a post from Schranz Militia.

It's hard-core techno. To me it sounds like a German cousin of Gabber, although I am sure some expert will tell me how they are completely different. I didn't like whatever Schranz or Gabber I've heard so far.

I am sure you know New Age. Enya is a prime example. Usually it's dreamy pads with equally dreamy vocals, often with a Celtic or Oriental flavor.

Funny, until a couple of weeks ago I knew I liked Shpongle's music but had no idea who Simon Postford was. And I still haven't heard anything by Hallucinogen or Younger Brother. Fun of discovering things backwards...

but if you try to be everything to everybody diversity can be damaging
...again you can have variation in the music but there must be consistency in message- titles metaphors etc...learn from politicians           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

Schranz is the german words for "scream" and "dance" put together. It was a word invented to describe the subset of Techno with a heavy-hitting, fast, unrelenting beat that makes you scream and dance

(skip to 2:50 to hear the good part)

"Schranz" was around for a while, but then it started being influenced by some of the more creative heads from the gabber scene and they merged forces to create the newer sound of "hardtechno"

im really openminded when it comes to music, but this stuff i really cant dig. I've been to some of this partys in berlin hamburg and even in rotterdam, ended up at all of them pretty much by mistake. black rooms with strobboscope smoke and few rasists jumping around like crazy mixed up with some other freaks. its to heavy, not my cup of tea.

cheers!
