composing is the Intuitive skill , artistic . Going where no one went before
Arrangement is the practical side .., we have found out that a project most likely has beginning , story , end .. it differs , but in most cases we have this kind of arrangement .
both things go together hand in hand .

I thought composers decide scales, harmonies, melodies, motifs & put them all 2gethr with tension release. I can do that.
The arranger then does what? puts in cool breaks & buildups? spreads out the melodies? adds samples? what?

I can only speak for myself, but I compose and arrange the track at the same time , .
Buildups ,cool breaks , deciding the length of sections is one thing , making them fit together with the synths ,effects, and other eleménts that run inside these sections , thats the fun and whole intuitive/individual work .
For me arrangement is not the most easy part , but melodies and basslines fly out of my brain constantly , for others it may be excactly the opposite, having more structured thoughts maybe . Imho this is the fun of making music , connecting these two parts, the ideas and then to structure them so they come out the best possible way .

just spoke to workmate from orchestra. she says composition is original whereas arrangement is just rewriting sheet music for different arrangements of instruments so they sound cool.
Question is then Y do u need arrangement in psytrance as the composer is responsible for all the pieces on all instruments. additionally breaks & buildups would b the composers responsibility rather than the arrangers. wouldnt remixing be arrangement? |

Composing is creating melodies/effects whatever, arranging is deciding where they fit into a track.
Composing and arranging tends to go hand in hand though, as most people sort of write melodies or whatever as they're arranging.
But think of it this way, a remix of a track is basically taking all the original defining elements (melodies, mainly) and re-arranging them (maybe adding a new bassline or something), so that's a lot more about arrangement with virtually no composition . |

so when sum1 says theyve composed their track & just need 2 arrange it, what do they mean?
That theyve basically done the track & need to move some pieces around where they work? & change an instrument or motif?
Y not just say that uve composed ur track, (and dont need to arrange it).
& NE1 else but the composer who works on the positions of pieces is the arranger.
Y would a composer say that he had to do composition & arrangement on a track. I dont understand it. it sounds like nonsense.
Was this guy just feeding me pretentious self important crap? What is arranging that composing is not?

Think of composing as all the little parts, and arranging as the whole track. You compose a bassline, or a melody, or a breakbeat or a pad, but then you have to decide how to arrange them. Ie, "hmm maybe I'll have the bass and the kick going with a pad, then stop the bass for 1 bar and bring in this melody on beat 4, then bring the kick and bass back for 8 bars, then bring in the ole hi hats".
Like I said though, composing and arranging tend to be pretty intertwined, I don't really see how someone could compose a track without arranging it, unless they just wrote a whole bunch of melodies in one key, plus have a whole sample base of effects and whatever and just need to put the thing together.
Edit to add - What you said about one person composing, and anyone else messing with it being the arranger, that's very true and is pretty much what happens with most classical/jazz charts or whatever. One person composes the main melodies and riffs, the other arrangers it for what ever instruments need to play it.
Like I said, the whole composing/arranging thing doens't really apply in psy, except maybe for remixes, because generally the ocmposer and arranger are the same person.
Finnnnal edit - Arrangement really can add as much to a track as the composition. I mean, look at GMS, they've hit on this arrangement formula that they use constantly, basically have a build up every 8 bars and a little drop out in th e 8th bar with a rising noise then bang bring everything back in. This arranging style gives the tracks huge energy, and work great on the dancefloor. But then imagine hearing some of GMS's melodies or whatever in a progressive type arrangement with long 128 bar percussive build ups etc, the feeling of the track would be completely changed.

well i do that. only arrange after having everything composed
arranging having the idea of a track done is much easier. most of my arrangements come good at the first try. |

Hey Bukboy,
Chek this link: http://forum.waves.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=snd_Trance
The trance experience readers forum ,this guy Torsten Fassbender released a very good book named "The trance experience" witch is about all components of the track ,from first step to the final, with Aranging ,groove and sound production(BTW he use Waves; .It will help you to understand things;)
Btw , to compose a track mean to write lines(harmonys ,melodys) and lyrics ,and to arrange is to put them in to the track, where they belong to(create a move in the time, with rythm components).
Honestly) arranging is pretty boring thing. am i right)?
