Hi !
I would like to know how you proīs complete your songs.
Iīve heard that the experts first arrange there songs with no eq or effects and make it sound as good as possible before you beginn mixing it with eq,adding effects and stuff.
I do it in this order
1.I arrange it make and make it sound as good as possible then 2. add eq
3.highpass and lowpass to all sounds
4.Effects
Though i often have a problem which often strikes me on the way.
When i arrange i start with kick, bass and drums it works without any problem.
But when i want to make my leads i notice itīs hard to find space for it and it all sounds muddy.
So thatīs why i start to use eq allready in this place to the other instruments to make space for my leads. Is there a way to avoid this in this phase of the work. What could be the main reason that makes it difficult to find space for my leads ?
Would be nice to know how you people here at isratrance do the steps i mentioned above
Like adding eq, effects.
Best regards Conny

EQ is not the only way to seperate parts in the mix.
also compression & stereo imaging.
high ratio compression can take your parts more "to the face" and diverse panning can wider your image and create more room for your leads.

True panning can make a big difference.

And u can use eqs for sound design while arranging. Don't linit urself with this order of producing u described there.
Just use an eq if u think u need it to make space

well... i'm not sure but from what i've read maybe your leads are too much bassy... try changing the leads right from the synth (with it's filters)... i rarely use LP filters (i mean the synth filters, not eq) on leads because of that. |

why not using eq while arranging???
i use everything i need while arranging
why wait to the end and start all over again if you can get to the end with the sound close to what you want it to be and than only fix if you need?

I have a seperate bus/group channel with a highpass filter on it that I send all my leads/fx through right from the beginning.
Then EQ individually at the end.

Itīs probably good to use highpassfilters
from the beginning.Though i find it hard to know where to set the highpass for synthleads.
I believe my muddines came from the low end
of my bass and kick.Iīve read that you should remove the low end with an eq or it will eat up your mix and the leads will be difficult to hear.
But what is the best way to remove the low end ? with eq or can you use a highpass for this ?
Will the highpass remove all the low
frequensis so you donīt have to use a eq in this area ?

I usualy apply any EQ and FX as I write the track. Make everything sound good from the beginning. I high-pass everything except the kick and bass. I use multiple busses for leads/percussion/rythm leads/FX/pads/wooshes/etc. All these busses have hipass filters set to taste. (Anywhere between 100 Hz and 250 Hz).
These days I usualy apply FX to individual sounds as soon as I need them. Then you can cut things up and loop/reverse/pan/re-effect/etc sounds quickly. This also saves on CPU ...

an EQ is a combination of filters, so it makes no difference if u use EQ or filters.
panning makes a difference, but a good mix should sound perfect in mono too.... Someone on this forum already gave a great tip to check if it fits. just pan ur sound from left to right. If it disappears or loses clarity at some point it means that it's fighting for the same frequency band as a sound that is panned in that place. For psytrance this is not that important, because we don't get a lot of radio-time (It's specifically for the radio that u have to check if the mix works in mono), but it is good to do it like that in general too though... if it works in mono ur sure that it's EQ'd correctly. |
