Are you a CD buyer? (What's missing to make this product more stainable?)

The CD market is dying or even dead by now. Nothing will resuscitate it. Labels need to focus on the quality of their digital releases. This means full cover art in high resolution, lossless audio quality, and properly named and tagged files.
The ZIP file is the new jewel case.

Well let´s see....What would make cd´s a sustainable medium?
For starters less crap and better quality control would certainly be in order.
As it is now only very few of the about 1000000 labels are actually what i would deem consistent in this way.
Now don´t start thinking that crap is something subjective, as i have seen many examples of poorly executed music from every angle of the process.
There is such a thing as crap but it takes trained and sober ears to pick it out it would seem.
I would also like to add a +1000 on the subject of cd-text (stop sending in cd-a masters to plants!!! Use the industry standard DDP and have CD-text with a simple mouse click) Digi-Pak´s seem to live a more hardy life during transport, and i do appreciate printing on a matte finish without any annoying plastic between the artwork and me. Should i much to my surprise be asked to play a dj set i would simply burn the tracks i wanted from my collection onto blanks and leave the nice covers at home (+1 for dj friendly slip notes)
The medium itself is neutral, it is what we make of it that matters. To me a disc is a memento, a keepsake. I have a very physical attachment to the music i listen to, be it on dat, vinyl or cd.
Finally it is worth badgering your favourite labels about selling cd´s directly to you, cutting out the middleman and hopefully making label artist and fan happy all at once!
As a fan of music first and foremost i would also like to see a decrease in prices, but i know how this works and how little is actually sold already.
In this climate a dramatic decrease in prices for cd´s would simply mean a lot less than almost no income is being generated meaning less output, even from consistent labels.
Everybody needs to eat and there are artists and labels out there that have put so much in terms of effort, time and money that even moderate cd sales won´t offset that.
With physical media i at least will have all my music intact when my HD´s crash. Well pressed discs will last around 20 years if not more. What is the expected life of a harddrive? (The preferred medium for everything these days it seems)

well then figure something out , there's too few virtuous ones out there to carry this on for too much longer ,coz even the fancy unbreakable full of stickers and booklets cd will equal to = , lol
dont feel regret for the lost metal and mj etc cd`s from when i saw younger , and a bunch of psy ones too, from when i got into this ..im not the only one who dont care ... man , ektoplazm = "successful" coz is free , and of course they put out killer tunes , but still ... the small music business is ruthless , only the good things will last (longer) ...... is good thing maybe , self purging mechanism , killar , freedom

Prices do matter.
CDs are very much alive and well in places where piracy is either legal or simply not persecuted - that means everywhere outside the US, Canada and the EU.
I remember this magic store where every CD had the same price: $2.50
Latest version of M$ Windows - $2.50
Adobe Photoshop - $2.50
MP4 rip of the latest blockbuster (often some not even released yet) - $2.50
That forgotten album by Dschinghis Khan - … you get the idea.
Are you afraid your civilized customs will confiscate this stuff?
No worry – step into our “certified” section, please. Exact same pirated CDs with a trademark of a state-owned stamping company and a government agency seal on a holographic sticker - $3.00
Now, it doesn’t take a Nobel laureate to figure out what’s going on here: the contents are “free”, so the cost reflects only the cost of the medium, printing and distribution – with a little bit left for a store owner’s college tuition and an occasional drinking binge.
Nobody stops CD labels from adopting the same attitude, right? Just add X cents per track for artists’ royalties – and that’s it! Do you really believe $4 CDs will die off as fast as $15 CDs??
Labels' greed and stubborness kills CDs at least as quikly as the technological progress. Let's not forget the "human factor" in this story. |

music on hard disks can be copied. I have all of my music backed up on 3 places. One accidental scratch is what takes to ruin a cd.

This just pisses me off.
People who cry about cd prices being high (sorry, but 10$ is NOT high), ask for it to be cheaper. If it was 4$, would you buy it? Of course not. You will not.
People are used to downloading for free and NOT buying, so even if it was for free and all they needed was to get up from the chair they will not do it.
4$ does not leave anything for both the label and the artist.
Or you think artists should not be able to live from their music? You know what, not live. Pay off the investment in the studio.
We are greedy? You are cheap.

so DVDA's are sci-fi i guess...
anyway piracy was always there ...
i just can't buy cds even if i wanted to ...needs more accessibility for people like cd shops(real ones) and more ripping protection. a good quality original cd will last long enough even if its a little scratched

Even if cd's were as low as 2 dollars each very very few people would buy them.
People in our days wont buy something that they can get for free and i dont blame them since i understand we live in difficult times.
I personally stopped buying psy trance cds since last year just because nothing good gets released.
Good progressive is my new fixation and thank god labels like Rennaisance still exist.

Exactly my point, not including the "difficult times" part. I'm sure those people have enough money on beer, cigs, drugs, etc. But that's not something you can get for free.

It’s a matter of general etiquette to wait for a couple of seconds after asking a question – instead of instantly putting an answer into somebody’s mouth.
How do you know that I won’t buy CDs at $4 a piece? What do you think I did in the store I described earlier? Granted, those were $3 CDs, not $4. Big deal, I would’ve bought them at $4 as well. I’d rather pay $4 for a CD and go on with my life than roam through endless list of pirate blogs and download God knows what.
I recently went through my music collection and deleted everything I don’t intend to keep. That included not only music I didn’t like but pirated CDs I don’t intend to buy. You know what? I ended up with a handful of pirated CDs and tons of music from Ektoplazm. Still, out of the 6-7 CDs that I kept, I’ll probably end up deleting some down the road – and this is a matter of price. I liked Ocelot’s “You Live in a Zoo”, for example - but not enough to pay $13 + S&H for it. Would I pick it up in some campus basement store or a flea market for $4? You bet I would!

BS!
If $2.50 was enough to keep a stamping factory, a store and an army of crooked cops and tax auditors happy – I don’t see why $4 wouldn’t do the same thing. When I buy a track from iTunes store for 99 cents – how much does the artist get? Are you gonna tell me that 4.00-2.50=$1.50 per CD is not enough for an artist? Are you out of your mind? Britney Spears doesn’t get paid that much.

Then I suggest you cross the sea and see for yourself how it works in Northern Africa.

Do they have an option in Northen Africa to download those cds for free?
I seriously doubt that.
