Hi all Just got a new audio interface (presonus audiobox USB 2x2) and new monitors (tapco s8) - the problem I am having is I am getting an intermittent spike of white noise/cracking when I use the monitors.

I listened to them in the shop and they were fine, I brought them home and I played them at probably..oh 15-20% volume for an hour or so, was so happy...but then I rebooted my computer and when I did, the reboot or w/e triggered them to make a large noise. The noise they made was pretty loud, but not as loud as they could potentially get so I wasn't particularly worried. However, an hour or so later I am playing around in ableton and I hear the white noise/static come in for the first time. I am now worried.

To test the speakers I generated a very high and a very low tone and played them for 20+ seconds - no problems. I play a full 6 minute full on track - no problems. I go into ableton and generate a 4/4 kick drum pattern and I hear it every 10-15 kicks or so, but its still pretty random. It has also happened when I am just clicking on things within the windows interface.

I am not sure if its the monitors, the interface, my settings or whatever.

I am using windows 7 64 bit, the newest win7 64 bit driver for the audiobox, balanced RCA cables from interface to monitors...

I am hoping that its just something to do with how I've set up the sample rates or something - here is the configuration I have currently:

I have a program that came with the audiobox called Universal Control that allows me to pick 44.1 KHz, 48 KHz, 88.2 Khz, and 96 Khz. I have 44.1 set right now. Also has a dropdown for "Safe Mode", of which the options are normal, safe mode 1, safe mode 2, safe mode 3 (i have normal selected). I also have a buffer size dropdown, 64, 128, up to 4096 are available options but its pre-set to -1, and thats what its at currently. However, Universal Control says its driver version is 0.0.0.0.

I can open up ableton and click hardware configure and I get an entirely different option screen, though it has the number of the current driver version.

It is called "ASIO-USB Control Panel 2.8.40"- -in the USB tab it allows me to select either 44.1 khz or 48 khz as the sample rate, also says the resolution is 24 bit. In the ASIO tab it says the ASIO resolution is 32 bit and has dropdowns for system performance and application priority...I changed these to highspeed and high respectively and it drops the output/input latency.

within ableton itself my in/out sample rate is set at 44100, though I can also select 48000.

in ableton, my driver tape is set to ASIO though I can also pick MME/Directx

What gives? What sample rate should I be picking? Do you think my speakers are busted?

Definitely going to call the dude at the shop back tomorrow if this doesn't stop/I can't figure it out, if anyone has any ideas on how to properly troubleshoot this or has a clue whats going on, I would be very grateful.

try to play the monitors from a regular stereo, and not from the audio interface, see if same artefakts appear           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

dont have anything else to try them on read the manual last night, it said something about keeping the RCA/XLR cables away from the AC cables cuz that can introduce noise....

alright - it has to be the audio interface, just got an adapter for my headphones and the same exact shitty sounds are coming through there too - PHEW! I was worried like crazy my monitors were busted.

Was on tech support w/ presonus and they forwarded me to some knowledge base article about optimizing windows 7 for performance but even though I did all the stupid shit (most of which was already done or did nothing) no improvements.

any thoughts as to how to troubleshoot?

this is really fucking stupid. I have pretty much tried absolutely everything that I can think of and that has been suggested on the presonus forums (though 90% of it is users, not mods - shitty support) including:

swapping usb cables

installing windows 7 32 bit instead of 64 bit

adjusting buffer rates (If I go below 1120 buffer in ableton I get noise constantly, though it still happens frequently - I do want the buffer small as possible as it increases my latency right?)

adjusting sample rates/bitrate

trying a different wall socket

trying all the 'windows 7' audiobox drivers

upgrading my motherboard bios

The thing that really gets me is that it works fine on my girlfriends completely shit 5 year old laptop - no noise, no problems. but my relatively souped up desktop has these problems. presonus is shit.

seems to be sth about the usb controllers or the drivers... maybe ask at presonus for not recommended usb devices ... had some probs with my audiointerface and it was the firewire controller in the end...

g'luck solving this           -----------------------------------------------
