I have seen relationships destroyed becuase of these, families torn apart, people not seeing sunlight for days, not showering, living off junkfood. After a while some of my friends started to look like they could find a slot on faces of meth........they have become socially isolated, have become technosexuals...

Anyone have similar experience with people on MMO crack?

I am a video games addict but I do try to maintain some sort of a social life here and there. Games like WoW is a one way ticket to social isolation.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

I think there's a certain social stigma about video games and especially MMO's and other games which simulate society, as well as the people who enjoy playing them.

Video games, in my opinion, are reaching the point of being works of art. Some video games have very well-written, engaging plotlines, excellent soundtracks, superb graphics, and can even be a form of mental exercise (namely simulations and puzzle games). There are plenty of people who pore over literatures, art, music, and such for hours, all activities which can be as interactive as the beholder wishes them to be, and there are also plenty of people who spend hours a day engaged in even less healthy activities... TV, drinking, drugs, and soforth but these are not talked about with the same alarm as someone who plays a lot of video games because these sorts of activities have been around a lot longer and have become more socially acceptable. For example, if a person spent much of their time, health, and energy centered around bars, clubbing, nightlife, and all the "virtues" and "vices" that go along with it and called it having a social life, people would accept that and not judge him the same way as they would if he preferred to invest a lot into a computer game hobby.

Personally, I enjoy computer games, specifically games that involve lots of human teammates and competitors, epsecially when I was playing with my real life friends. When I was in the Army, my friends and I would frequently have all-night LAN parties, playing shooters and realtime strategy games for hours on end, and other times, it was MMOs. Looking back, I wonder a lot how far I could be along the path of music if I had put all that video game time towards that instead, but I don't regret liking to play games. I've had loads of good times doing it. I am especially conscious of how much game time I allow myself though, but that goes into the fact that too much of ANYTHING is never a good thing... not just games.

On a side note, I can think of one example where a person who I frequently played with (one of those that seemed to constantly be online, every day) in one MMO was sick and in a wheelchair, making regular trips to the hospital, and literally couldn't do anything physical or social because of it, in a lot of pain, and for her, MMOs were her only release and social outlet, and I think having access to that really was a positive thing for her. I'm sure that's not the only situation like that... point being, it's possible to get a good side out of just about anything.
