I was just wondering...lately I can't see any album or compilation being printed on a Digipack CD...All of them now come in jewel cases with a simple front cover with 2 pages max. And then labels wonder why no one buys their cds. I know that most people here will tell me that the most important thing to them is the music and that we shouldn't judge a book by its covers etc...but the thing is that when I buy a CD I want something extra in return simply because I find mp3s to be better in some other areas that are really important to me, that being the fact that they can't get damaged like a cd, they are easier to handle and sort etc...so when I buy a CD I would like to get something like a poster, a booklet with some artist information, a sticker...heck, I even remember some old chakra compilations from nova tekk that came with a perfume! anyone remember those...you don't get things like that today...so why can't you label heads make a little bit of extra effort for some of us home listeners (because mp3s fail miserably if you're a DJ) and give us another reason to buy your music.
It seems to me that most music today is being released for DJs and I can tell you that you won't survive on just the DJs. Most buyers will come to a shop and see some lousy cover with no extra info and the surely won't decide to buy that. There are some releases that I find pretty average but I'd buy them just because they have an awesome artwork concept, and a lot of uninformed people think this way which is why YSE is probably doing very good with their double CD concept..even though they suck big time
your thoughts?

I remember the perfumes from "Chakra". I own the Green version, but unfortunately lost the perfume though
And I agree with you on almost every word. It’s been discussed before though, and I don’t think we’ll see much of a change – one exception could be Tribal Vision Records with their professional "Urban Legends" package, containing an extensive booklet, dj-inlay and of course one hell of a compilation
Labels like Digital Structures (Son Kites "Colours") and Iboga (with "Set>3" as an exception though) also have some quite extensive booklets, and I also like Nanos extra material, although I couldn’t download the track from "Natural Section".
Only point where I disagree with you is on the digipacks. Sure they are better protection for the CD's and they feel nice (Stress Assassins "Carrier Track" is a good example), but seldom do they contain any "extras" and most of them don’t fit into my CD-shelf
But of course the music is the most important thing. Sometimes it's just a very empty feeling to recieve an album with cheap packaging. DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

But why digipacks? I hate digipacks. Artist info and stuff can be inside jewel cases as well.
Want some example?
Cosma Nonstop album, of course.
Amalgamated Amalgamation compil, which had a nice post inside.
Ticoc - Aero with all the great (retarded ) humor inside.
All this come inside jewel cases. So why the digipacks?

I hate digipacks.
They look nice but break easily.
Several times i recieved CD's from web shops and they were already broken.
Digipacks can't be repaired as the regular ones.

Look at the Chemical Mafia CD, now there is a heavily invested cover, beautifull Digipack, DJ slip and a 16 page booklet with the "story" of the chemical "Mafia".
but that's skazi that is expected to sell over 5000 copies of this CD.

Well, its a great idea.. if you expect to sell ton's of copies.. I've spoken to a couple of labels and they stuggle to sell 500 copies of there CD.. I mean, sure, it would be great as a consumer to get a folded poster or something, and hey, i might actually use that idea.. , but for hella sure its going to cost more, and what if the CD doesn't sell?? then you just dropped an extra 500$ down the drain.. well, i shouldn't say down the drain, but you get what i mean..
But for sure, bigger labels with a few releases and a regular clientelle should try a little harder to "impress" there people..

That's exactly the dilemma clown. On one hand the labels must of course focus on the music, but on the other hand mp3s are here, and a lot of people (myself included) are often disappointed with cheapish releases (packaging), where you tend to feel you might as well could have downloaded the tracks.
Degrading the pleasure of owning an original release surely isn't going to result in selling more CD's, that's for sure

exactly
and about the digipacks I guess it's just down to personal taste...I really like a good quality digipack print even though it's true that they degrade with time...and I've seen some cds that are on a digipack and they still manage to cram in a booklet very nicely...also I've seen some releases that labels spent a lot of money on just to add some extra pages yet nothing interesting is printed on them...I really appreciate it when you get the artists biography on an album or any other informative text and there are so many cds with plenty of empty space in the artwork for just such a text and yet they leave it as it is

Seriously, digipacks suck. I can't stand the things. The covers aren't protected and they end up getting ruined. Scratch or break a jewel case and you can just slide it all into a new one!
For the labels, at least explore this - http://www.jewelboxing.com/
Might be expensive, looks like a good graphic designer could really go to town with it though!
A point was made originally that should be stressed - releases aimed solely at DJs are really diluting the quality of music that is coming out. Why release so much music that won't have any lasting value?

For the same reason, I don't really like digipack.... but I aggre with you Dovla : would be nice to have a few words from the label or some infos about the artists in the booklet. And it won't cost that much....
Actually, I appreciate DJ slips ... even if I'm not a DJ I store all my CDs in 'logic case' .... It's just easier to handle....
Stickers are nice too. I put them on my laptop or on my fridge ;-)
BTW, congratulation to Spliff Music : hight quality packaging for Propaganda and Safi album ! Well done guys !

I opened my freshly arrived package today and SURPRISE! I finally see a label using the jewelboxes I have recommended here and elsewhere... they look excellent! Kudos to Sinn.tec for this... V/A's Intense Activity and Tshitraka Project both have 'em. Way to go
