Hello Folks,
When a mastering plugging such as Ozone applied to an individual track (e.g. kick) and when the track is completed, ready for final mastering, does the final mastering will screw up dynamics on that track?
Thanks!

I generally wont use a full mastering plug in on a track, it REALLY eats CPU and while I'm not sure if it'll mess with the dynamics, I'm sure you'll have to re-adjust some settings once you do your final mastering.
I prefer to use individual compression on tracks and usually an Ozone on the final mix. |

the plugin will never screw up anything. the person using it will.
basically, i would not use mastering plugins on individual sounds because quite a few of them add delay (and therefore latency) and they eat quite a lot of cpu. but if you like the sound of it and can cope with its cpu hunger or can live with bouncing it to audio, why not? if it sounds good it is good, and that is the bottom line.

One thing to watch out for is overcompressing tracks. If you compress a mixer subtrack with a ratio of 8:1 and the mastering engineer applies another round of compression with a 2:1 ratio you will have effectively compressed your subtrack with a 16:1 ratio and this could be more than you bargained for.
Another thing to watch out for is dither. If you are working at 24 bits, some mastering suite plugins may dither their output to 16 bits. If several of your individual mixer tracks are dithered, another round of dither applied by the mastering guy (chick) will probably be bad for your sound.
Using too many plugins in series may also be bad for your sound, so only use them if you really need them and use the bypass button to check whether they really make a difference.
But if it sounds good on a good reference system, it is good.

Thanks guys! I am not really worried about the CPU consumption. Once I get the sound that I am looking for I’ll bounce it back as an audio track again. |

i do. mate and it really helps me out i tend to mix more or less while im creating and then i fine tune everything once its done... i use the ozone like u mentioned but i do suggest u got a real strong cpu or have two cpus like i have 3 cpus just make sure like someone stated bout the latency... but overall i do it and it helps me out sometimes u gotta to make something sit well in the mix otherwise i get distracted... thats just me though to eachs own... what ever worx for ya hehe |

Do you mind if I ask why you want to use a plugin like Ozone on a specific sound anyway? Surely you don't use every section of it every time, and you have to turn off dither etc. each time you use it? Another issue for me would be the fact that you have to render the sound to free up CPU before you can process other sounds, which I wouldn't fully recommend as it makes it difficult to tweak the settings for a given sound to fit it in the mix as the track progresses.
Then there's the latency... I'm not sure if Ozone falls into this category but (as was mentioned above) I gather that not all mastering plugins report their latency to the host program, as they are not designed to be used in a production setting so their designers didn't include this function that they thought wouldn't be needed... and in a complex plugin like this the latency will quite possibly vary according to which sections of it are turned on, and what their settings are... this means that DAWs like Cubase and Logic cannot automatically compensate for it, and this in turn means that you will have to manually compensate for the latency by eye when the sound is rendered in order to keep it in sync with the rest of the track.
I would suggest using single-function plugins (for mastering as well as general production!) as they are much more efficient, usually allow for automatic PDC and are available in more variety to give you more colours and control in your track.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the $0.02
Ozone was just an example. It could be any other mastering tool. I was playing around the other day and worked really well on my kick. So i said, what the hell, put that in but wasnt sure what would happen at the final mastering stage...
Tought maybe applying mastering plugging second time may or may not screw the dynamics...
I am not really concern about the CPU consuption...I am currently working on only few tracks. Once i like it and the fx s are applied i just bounce it back as an audio.
Cheers again!
