My advice is to not buy any templates, or to just use them as inspiration.

When I first got my APC40 I bought the Isotonik template, downloaded the Will Marshal template and a couple of others.

Today I use my own custom template but not any of that weird script garbage - just normal routings inside Live because I'm not a freakin programmer

My template is very inspired by the Will Marshal template though, but I'll just give you a quick rundown on how I set things up for DJing.

4 audio tracks, 4 return tracks. the audio tracks each have a 3 band EQ from Tarekith on them and each return track has a different FX chain (one is a reverb, one is a delay, one is a glitcher etc).

The first 4 faders on the APC are track volume for the 4 audio tracks. the next 4 faders are for the Bass EQ on the audio tracks. the bottom 8 encoders are for the Mid/High EQ on the audio tracks.

The top 4x8 banks of encoders are all set up the same way - the top 4 encoders are for the send/return level of the 4 tracks and the bottom 4 encoders are for changing parameters on the devices in the return track. so for the delay those parameters would be feedback, dry/wet etc.

The crossfader controls the level of all of the return tracks so that if something gets too crazy I can have quick control over its volume. I never use more than 1 return at once and it simplifies the setup a bit.

I also have the Isotonik Lite max4live plugin on my master, it allows for mouseless interaction while DJing with things like 'hold down the track selection button on a track that's playing a clip and ableton will show you that clip' - so that you don't have to double click on the clip.

Also I reccomend midi mapping the Follow button to something on the APC. I use the Stop button on the APC because I never want to hit that accidentally and have it stop the show

but yeah this setup is one I have been using for over a year now and its great. 4 decks is more than enough for pretty much anything you want to do. In fact, 2 is usually enough so if you want you could dedicate deck 3/4 to weird samples or even make one a MIDI track and load a synth on there for live performance stuff.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I actually find the APC40 really awkward for traditional DJing. The endless encoders and only two rows of Track Control (which are the only ones I'd want to change the mapping for) don't really lend themselves to 3 band EQ style mixing. I find myself using the APC a lot more for more minimal, down tempo stuff and less for Psy.           www.facebook.com/chemogen

It definitely took me a while to get to a setup that felt natural and efficient on the APC. The way its set up by default is pretty bad.

However, it is whatever you make it...and I am confused as to how it is more useful for you for minimal/downtempo but not for psytrance

For those who are interested, I have uploaded a blank live set with the APC40 controls I use mapped out:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/wiih1a

I use live 8.2.7. The only non-standard plugin in there is Isotonik Lite 8.3 which allows for holding down the track selection buttons to have ableton navigate to the clip that's currently playing in the associated deck. Not necessary but highly suggested if you have max4live because its free.

The only thing that you will have to set up yourself is the FX on the send returns. My FX chains were full of 3rd party plugins so I just deleted them. The routings for the sends are still there for the top row. For instance the Pan bank the send for FX1. The top 4 encoders of the Pan bank will be the send amount for Deck 1/Deck 2/Deck 3/Deck4 and so on. You just need to put some effects in there and map controls for those effects to the bottom 4 encoders for each bank.

If anyone has trouble setting this up I would be happy to help

Well mixing Psy in a traditional DJ style is the same as anything else, but I find I'm more able to use the APC to its full potential when playing around with live improv of more downbeat and sparse music. With Psy - especially full-on - I find that the sound and arrangement is pretty convoluted and dense enough as it is that there really isn't all that much space to change things up drastically.

Well that sounds like an issue with mixing psytrance in general and nothing to do with the APC40 eh?

I do share your opinion in that most of the time when I play busy/full psy I do minimal mixing and just let the track tell its story.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
