ive made a dual boot system and added vista on the 2nd cos i need to learn them for the DAW'S we sell in the store...
they look pretty but they are heavy on ram and buggy on some software.

but all in all for a new os and for the pc platform its not bad.. but i feel this is an os that will be more usable when 4g of fast ram and faster cpus come out with super strong gpus all in the todays price of a middle speced pc.

my friend did this dual boot system, but if i were you i would backup all your stuff, coz he lost everything.....

your friend prolly messed up somewhere, windows aint that evil =)

i got dual boot ever since i got this laptop (came with vista) , well...last month i formatted my XP partition and re installed it...the vista partitions is still there, the dual boot just isnt working cause i need to install a little software which gives me the pre boot menu....but it works like a charm anyway. then again, im considering formatting the vista partition, i just havent done it yet cause it is a factory install, and those suckers dont give OS cds anymore with the laptop...

mostly cause tiny XP > XP = Vista, therefor Tiny XP > vista =)           un-fucking-believable

I think the best motivator not to switch to vista is that it has nothing to offer over XP at this moment. It's not 'more stable' or whatever, there is no performance increase on anything, you will only lose in performance if you keep all the eyecandy enabled and if you disable it you will be at max on the same level as XP. Why put all that time in a useless upgrade?

The only reason why you could possibly want to upgrade is if you are running on a 64bit processor because then you will be able to use the 64bit features and you can allocate more than 3GB's of ram (If you have that in the first place). And even that only counts if you run on an AMD processor cause intel's 64bit implementation is really poor (at least for current core 2 duo cpu's).

The disadvantages of switching from 32bit to 64bit is that you might find some of your hardware end up with unstable drivers (or even worse NO drivers) and your software might not be able to run or be buggy.

Perhaps in time when 64bit has become the standard you should consider it. Right now it is just starting to take off and the overall performance increase probably doesn't outweigh the instability it comes with.

No. its NOT worth it at all! Even on a corporate level is not worth it and even MORE on an artistic AV level. If you need 64 bit then use XP 64 but only after doing proper research on the sound card drivers for your device. There is currently nothing that Vista can offer to a DAW that is even remotely worth the headaches of driver issues, bugs and security holes that XP has had years of proper development and testing for. A good DAW needs stability and performance. Not pretty colors, fading animated backgrounds, excess features that have nothing to do with audio. I would wait at least a another year before even thinking about going there and even then you'll more then likely be turning off so many services, processes and "features" that will drop performance.           Anomaly

"A new audio engine architecture has been built for Vista, with most of the advanced features living in user space, with only the audio driver itself still in kernel mode. This should help with stability and keep the system going even if one of the advanced features runs into a problem or a bug."

most of it doesnt matter much, but you cant say there wasnt any improvement =)

and please....i seriously have more driver issue on my sp2 win xp then i had on vista....geez, my Zune only works on vista, on xp it wouldnt even recognize it...plus we shouldnt expect any directx upgrade for XP anymore, its gonna be all for vista (dx10 and up)

people are just afraid of vista =)

Hey brasirc,

I dont think people are actually afraid of vista, it would be more accurate to say people are SICK and TIRED of OS`s that constantly crap-out and need updates to get right, especially after the small amount of time vista has been released.

I know it would be very hard to develop an OS, but do I as a consumer have to buy a second rate product because big bad Microcrap need to recoup money for other failed or less profitable software?

The answer is Always.......
Release Vista even though its probably not reaaalllly ready heh. Thats my opinion.
Remember Windows 95 a, b, and developers version C.
Then Windows 98, 98se
Then 2000, Millenium edition....
Windows XP Sp1, Sp2,
and not to forget the numerous OEM versions?
Do I seed a pattern forming here or what?
Need to make money back for that Xbox360 overcooling stuffup I guess......
Could be wrong, have been before and may be yet again.......hehe
PS Just reinstalled XP and needed DirectX9.0c, and it was just updated with a November update.
Just Google it and it will be found.......

But that only if your mother board has the onboard HD Audio card i think.....

I think my friend didnt have that system where u could choose u just had to reboot and it automatically went to the other OS

i dont know if this caused the prob (i dont really see how it can)

but i just dont see much of an increase in the performance of Vista (except for gaming)
the only good thing about Vista IMHO is the 3d Chess           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]

LOL there is now way that i would let microsoft correct my room thats for sure.

And what does a zune and DX10 have in common its nothing you need when you run a DAW.

Edit: One more thing if a Zune from microsoft doesn´t work with a OS from microsoft, that just shows how much crap the zune is

I'm running vista x64 on a m1330 laptop without any problems. Ableton Live 6 and Live 7 beta work without problems & all vst plugins that I use are working fine. I'm also using asio4all 2.8beta and its working perfectly.
