Have anyone done the transition from XP to Vista yet on their DAW?

I haven´t done it yet, because of 2 major points.
1. My powercore card still hasn´t support for vista.
2. I usually wait when it comes to upgrade OS preferably to SP1 or in Vistas case SP2

I will wait till i get an 8core with 16 gig ram before i go to Vista, my freind tried to run vista on his DAW, he has a quad-core with 8 gigs, and he says it still gave him so much shit, half the necesary drivers dont exist yet. And I dont think Cubase or other appz can run on Vista yet, Maybe cubase 4 i dont know.....

IMHO Vista is a waste of power           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]

Hey Peter!

(nu kunde jag ta det här på svenska men för allas trevnad så,...)

I´ve gone over to Vista. But my Juli@ card have drivers for it. I suppose it depends on if the card you own support it or not.

I also use Fl studio and Acid and everything is working just fine, sometimes i start to think i have a Mac

I dont know about this 8 core and 16 gig ram tough,... Just have dual core and 2 gig ram, and its working just fine. I also tought that any 32-bit win application cant use anymore than 2 gig ram for itself. And you have to run 64 bit windows to acces more than 2 gig... But hey, i dont really know these tecnical stuff, its just things i´ve heard, so please correct me if im of on that one.

So my experience is: If the drivers u need is there, go for it! Its working really good. (it is using more Ram tough) But like xp there is alot of stuff that you would want to turn off, and have to tweak to get best performance,.. but u know those things.

i just dont see the point in an OS that uses 70% of ur PC's specs.....

true about 32 bit applications only being able to run on some of the ram(not sure how much) but the reason i said that 8 core thing, is i dont think it would be worth running an App like cubase or such on Vista with anything less....

Both FL and Acid are both not very CPU dependant appz therefore, it should run alrite on vista           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]

Really? As said, dont really know these things. Just that the machine i have got whith Vista already installed has worked fine for me. (my plan from start was to install XP instead, but scince it worked fine i didnt)
Noticed that it uses alot more RAM just to run, but someone told me it does that but uses less on the applications instead, and i believed it..

Ok. I got this info from Gol, the main programmer behind FL. I had the problem of not being able to load projects whith more than 2 gig ram. I was expecting that the swapfile was going to be used when my 2 gig ram was used up, but it didnt, just got some error message. Gol told me that absolutley no 32 bit app would use more than 2 gig RAM. And scince FL didnt support "stream from disk" option for Wav files, i had to go for Acid for mixing large projects.. (no problem for me, i like acid ;-))

Well,. use them then! ;-) No really, would i get alot more power from Xp? And should i go back in that case? I have read some article from Microsoft about Vista handling audio in different ways then older windows. Scince im no good at these things i cant really evaluate if these changes are that significant, but atleast i got that impression. Maby someone here can enlighten us more?

vista haters, get over it already...vista is not the end of the world dammit =|

there has been updates released already, and DAW performance has incresed.

the only thing that should be stoping you from moving to vista is driver compatibility or if you have like a single core 1gb ram (which would still work fine, but you would be on the limit)

other then that, vista is all around fresher and better then XP, and will be even better with new updates coming in...

this is like a deja vu of the 98 - ME transition, alot of people stood by 98 (specially gamers), but then again...ME was such a piece of crap...when XP came out everyone wanted to switch...

ive made a dual boot system and added vista on the 2nd cos i need to learn them for the DAW'S we sell in the store...
they look pretty but they are heavy on ram and buggy on some software.

but all in all for a new os and for the pc platform its not bad.. but i feel this is an os that will be more usable when 4g of fast ram and faster cpus come out with super strong gpus all in the todays price of a middle speced pc.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Why would you need a "super strong GPU" for a DAW?

One more thing i DO hope that with this OS, developers will write their programs with X64 instructions so we can use more memory for our DAWs and finally make use of our 64bit Cpus.           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

FL uses less power then other DAW's on itself true but once you pump it full with vst(i)'s it can get itchy around (even) 55%-85% so your system has got to be stable. Haven't tried vista and won't untill I hear mostly good news about it. Like actual advantages for audio & stuff...           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

If i had the choice i would run windows 98, i hate both XP and Vista with a passion...actually wait i would run Linux if there was Cubase for it....
IMHO Microsoft design non-flawless Operating systems, so customers keep updating and buying new versions......
its a way of guaranteeing urself millions of dollars, think about it.......
That just my wierd consipiracy tho......
My friend was running the 64 bit version, although when it f**ked out he tried the 32 bit version which i think confused everything, and he had to format and reinstall XP to get the PC to even boot.           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]
