Does anyone here use monitoring headphones for monitoring/mixing house/trance music ?

ive zero'd in on the audio tecnica ATH-M50s but i'm still skeptical if i should go for headphones instead of monitors

jus feel that headphones will be more portable (in case i need to move)
also, since there is no AC in my room i feel that with monitors the system will get overheated

are there any major sonic differences between Hs and Ms

please help
cheers!

I´m in kinda the same situation. I only use headphones (beyerdynamics DT990). I could use a monitor I guess, but I have my stuff in a very small room, theres nearly no space left and I guess the acoustics of the room aren´t good aswell.

I use Sennheiser HD 25 1-ii

do you guys use them for dance muzik ? the kinda low end that is necessary for dance muzik i feel headphones cannot pump out.. is that true ?

also Kryten.. if the monitors are near field and the sweet spot is say at a distance of jus 2ft away.. does the acoustics make a lot of difference ?           U can take me away from the freaks...

Headphones, as opposed to monitors, have no headroom.
If you listen with monitors you feel more 'space'.
Another problem is, that monitors are (or at least supposed to be) transparent, or 'flat', while headphones do color the sound.
I use headphones (AKG k-240) for reference, and I have Yamaha hs50 monitors.
I'm thinking about buying a sub woofer as well.

all mixes done in headphones will sound like shit on speakers. thats a fact and if anyone says different then he simply refuses to admit that his mixes are shit

headphones are good for checking things like hiss, small clicks, sometimes reverb etc...
you wont be able to get a good balance in the low freq, and stereo image.
like erez from infected once said "you can get a better mix with cheap monitors then with expensive headphones".
there are people that can get a decent mix by only using headphones, but thats usually because they had alot of experience referencing stuff on headphones and monitors.
using only headphones when mixing is a bad idea and there is alot of info on the net about this.

Well, its a bit OT but I have a question then.

What would be a good choice for a monitor?(or maybe two) I wouldnt want to spend more than a 100 bucks at the moment (bough so much other stuff recently and I need to save a bit^^)

In some much older thread I found "Alesis studio one" monitor speakers. They seem to be exactly what I can afford.....are they any good for my "hobby-homerecording" room?

this is not truth...
all my music is produced and mixed in headphones, and it sounds ok on speakers. It's all about "know your gear" thing...

But, of course, the best option is to use both...

I second Medea's statement. I haven't had any complaints from mastering engineers or even other artists when I tell them that I use headphones. So to make such a generalized statement isn't accurate and is pretty imflammatory. It would be akin to saying any music that isn't made in Pro Tools is shit.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I arrange and design in headphones sometimes, but I'd never do a final mix with headphones alone.

But equally I wouldn't do a final mix with just my monitors.

So much stuff has sounded pretty good on monitors, but then after tweaking in the headphones, there's been so much more space and clarity.

Did you mean mubali ?           "Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth."

i own ATH-M30 and they are a excelent headphones ... but i must admit that i also wanted to buy something from AKG but finances prevented me from going that way

the only bad thing with ATH-M30 is the fact that they squash your ears after 30 or so minutes you have to take them off to get some blood back to your ears           www.psilocybian.com / www.facebook.com/psilocybian
