Once a device panel has been set up (let's assume a few knobs and sliders for an A1 synth) how do you assign MIDI controllers to those parameters? I mean, I can use the mousewheel to move the knob or fader but I would like to assign controllers from my radium directly. By default, the Radium's knob #9 will modulate the filter cutoff but the pots in my inspector window do not move when I change the automation by hand. Besides, I would like to make my own assignments once I have selected the parameters of my choice.
BTW Device Panel setups are covered in the "cubase notes" of March's Sound on Sound. I learned a lot from the article, but it was not covered regarding how to automate knobs and sliders in the device panel without having to use your mouse. I think this can be a great feature as you can build your own controller section customized for each VSTi and have it displayed directly in the Inspector or Mixer - it'd be not nearly as useful without the MIDI controller automation so I hope that it can be done.

This helped me figure it out, but I gotta say the explanations and posts are a little muddled. I'll try and sumarize it all. This is based on the Oxygen 8, I assume the radium is similar:
-------------
Devices -> Device Setup --> Add "Generic Remote"
In the top Panel:
For MIDI In, click and select your device from the drop down window
For, let's say, Faders 1-8, re-name these "Knob 1-8" or whatever
For Knob #1, click on "Address" and then while you're twisting a knob, click "Learn". The address number should now change to reflect the MIDI CC value associated with your controler.
Repeat this step down the line to Knob #8 or however many you're using. The MIDI channels should also switch to whatever channel your MIDI controller is on (usually 1)
There will be a bunch of leftover entries from the generic remote template (Faders, Pans, Mutes, Sends etc), delete all the ones you don't use to keep things tidy.
-------
Add some VSTs.
On the lower Panel, the controls are already assigned with faders etc. on the VST Mixer. Click on the "device" entries to open a drop-down window and select your added VSTs. Only VSTs that already appear in the project will be available.
Click the Channel/Category entries and click "Device"
Lastly, under Value/Action, click the item on the VST you want to control (filter cutoff etc)
and then EXPORT the profile to save it to disk for later...

Thanks Aeon. But......
No such option "generic remote" in my folder dialogue. However, there is the option "midi device manager" under "devices". I poked through it and the process seems to be much the same as setting up a device panel itself, but I was not able to assign anything. It does look like this is the place it would be done (BTW I'm on SX 3.0.1). I guess I'll need more experimentation. I have yet to be able to assign VST'i parameters directly to my radium's knobs and sliders and this is a very essential and basic task! I'm a dork!

Hmm... yeah, in the Device Setup Window, you need to click over to the Add/Remove tab and select "Generic Remote" in between the CM Motormix and JLCooper CS10. It won't appear in the list until then, that might be the problem.
But that's in SX 2.2, it might have changed. I remember looking at the panel in 3.0 last weekend though, I think it's still in the same place.

OK. I got through it!! And it does work... But I still can't figure out how to do the same for the knobs I have in the inspector's device panel (named "user panel" in the inspector).
Also, do I have to do make the same assignments whenever I start a new track or will they be made permanent for that VSTi?

*bump*
that explanation was rather useful, thanks...
but i'm still having some problems. i work with cubase sx1 and a Behringer BCR 2000:
1.) i cannot select any VST's or VSTi's in the "device" colonne in the Generic Remote. all i can do is assign the midi channel parameters (volume, pan etc), but no parameters of the VSTi itself (adsr, cutoff etc.). in that colonne i can only choose from mixer, midi mixer, vst mixer, transport and command, even if the VSTi's are activated.
2.) i don't get parameter feedback on the behringer. it only works when i assign the knobs via behringer's learn function, not when i assign them via Generic Remote.
3.) the controller's midi learn function doesn't work with VST's nor VSTi's.
maybe there is someone who happens to work with this controller and knows whats going on here?
cheers, roman

SX... ONE?
Er... not sure what to tell you, mate. I have some other posts around here explaining this further with screenshots, but if your VSTs aren't showing up in the device column even if they are active, I think you're pretty much hosed.
I never used SX1 so I can't even say for sure that this ever worked there.

Yay, another generic remote thread. I can't seem to control VST inserts with the Gen Remote in Nuendo 3.0.x. Was possible with Nuendo 2.0.
Anybody have the same problems, know of a fix, anything ? Been stuck with this problem for a while now.
