this site is for an experimental electronic music mag called grooves. it's moving from being a printed mag to a digital magazine and will be putting most of their music reviews on the site. there's a bunch up there already.

IDM is usually typified by an unusual and experimental sound.
Artists like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher often push the caustic extreme of IDM and i think their more well-known tracks shouldn't be seen as exemplifying the genre as a whole. IDM actually covers a wide range of avant-garde electronic music.
Some IDM artists concentrate on a more spacey, glitchy, minimal sound (like Soehngenetic) while others go for melodies... some strange and wonky (like Boards of Canada and Porn Sword Tobacco), some melancholic and haunting (like Ulrich Schnauss and Guardner).
IDM is an extremely varied mixed bag of musical styles... it is just a matter of finding which style suits your own personal taste.
Common phrases often spoken by people listening to IDM are...
'Jesus, this is weird!'
'Jesus, this is weird!... I must play this to my friends... they will think i'm cool!'
...and, of course, the classic phrase...
'This Manitoba album is fucking shite... who it their right mind buys this garbage!?'

Ta for the groovemag link, nice reviews and interviews with major artists such as coldcut & murcof.
Interesting read about murcof's harddrive crash and the lengths he went to to recover the tracks for 'remembranza' which is an amazingly deep.
