so i'm starting to learn about high-quality MP3 encoding, and i have Exact Audio Copy configured to use Lame as an encoder. i'm trying to find out if i can rip my original CDs at good enough quality to use them with Traktor/Finalscratch at high volume. i always said before that WAV was the only choice, but i have read a lot of audophile sites that say VBR encoding with Lame can be quite good.
i started with Eskimo's album, which i encoded at 192 VBR (max peak is 320). then i used traktor to mix it with the original CD, and i switched back and forth in my headphones. i couldn't hear any difference, and i'm very picky about sound. the MP3 came out to about 14MB each, compared to 80MB or so for WAV files.
one annoying thing is that the tracks weren't names automatically by freedb or whatever, but this may be because newer psy isn't in the database.
basically, i would love to have all my CDs ripped to high-quality MP3, and be able to take a single laptop running Traktor to gigs. if i buy external soundcards, i can run two line-outs to the mixer, and EQ/cut/blend the tracks just like vinyl. i would use CDs, but i hate the lack of waveform on most decks. Traktor is far better with drift as well, as the tracks seem to stay locked in BPM.
ok, anyone trying to keep up with technology? |
