what if I have no inputs but a 1 mic and 1 instrument ( one at a time , never simultaneously ) and absolutelly no midi devices or anything?
just plain a/d conversion and top quality output?
this is my main purpose. I want something thats better than m-audio ozonic's integrated interface.

Yea you guys are probably right..maybe i should invest myu money in a good audio-interface instead..currently i'm running good gears with a lousy m-audio 2496 PCI...maybe that causes some lack in punch n low end..=)

Your sound card doesn't have anything to do with the frequency response of your monitors (unless you're working with 22.05khz audio on the master, which is very unlikely, and it would only affect the high end).
Are you even sure that your monitors are the problem? The BM6A MK II's have onboard filters for sub routing options, so make sure you have everything set up properly. They have a 7" driver, and I've heard them several times and never thought they lacked bass.

Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

You aren't going to get "top quality" integrated D/A for less the $1000+ USD range.
Keep in mind that if your interface has s/pdif I/O you can always add a discrete D/A converter later on. I can explain this further if you need me to..
I'll recommend some interfaces by price range (in USD). All of these are just from my opinion and experience with them:
$100-$300:
Echo Audiofire2 (for portability, low price, discrete headphone out for live use)
Presonus Firebox (for more I/O)
TC Electronic Konnekt 8 (for better conversion)
$300-$600:
Focusrite Saffire
Presonus FP10 (if rackmount is an option)
Focusrite Saffire Pro 10
$600-$1000:
Focusrite Saffire Pro 26
RME HDSP 9652 (if PCI is an option)
MOTU Traveler
$1000+:
RME Fireface 400 + 800
TC Electronic Konnekt 48
TC Electronic Digital Konnekt X32 (in combination with discrete D/A and A/D)

imho all the Tc Interface are crap...very instable drivers, well the converters and pres are kind of proffesional, but with that luggy drivers it makes no fun anyway..so..you mentioned really nice stuff like echo or presous in the lower range..then there is the apogee duet with big sound/converters and dynamic range..and next one is the fireface 400..everything else makes no real sense unless you are fine with the amount of pres..and are into a firewire solution....
just my 2cents..
have a good night m8s ;9

Hello!
Iv been mixing on a Bluesky mediadesk 2.1 for quite some time now.
my thoughts is that this setup would suites best for post production. But of course great to have just to check for excessive bass amount..
a perfect setup for me would be a pair of good monitors and a subwoofer system. then i would use the monitors for creation and mixing and check later in subwoofer system and pre master with them and check on monitors again, and then other systems..
its not a bad idea to get a subwoofer but dont create on it and rely on it..
to rely on it you really need to have a thrustworthy room and make correct placement... this is a mission which i never took my time for....
conclusion would be to live with that you dont have a party setup at home and instead check your mixes on friends subsystems if you have that opertunity..
i think you spend your money best on a new audio interface..
Good luck

get a fireface 400 better same quality but less cash!

Yes, but arent the ff 400 equipped with Firewire 400 that has a longer latency than Firewire 800? |

Kane, no mention of Lynx?! I personally have a FF400 & ditching it to get something with better D/A & A/D.
If anyone is interested in a used FF400 let me know!

a what?
firewire 800 is indeed faster but this would not affect latency but mainly track counts!
firewire cards are allready really latency efficient (i get a 2ms with my ff400)
if the doubling of the speed in fw800 would double the asio latency than a -2ms would be ideal..my vsti would play the note 2ms faster than i press the key on my keyboard!

I am using a PC Notebook with windows xp 32bits installed. Also I have good monitors, remote sl 61 and no need for analog inputs cuz the mic is recorded elsewhere along with the guitar samples. I record it using a mic and my laney amp.
All I need now is to improve monitoring.
FF400 is way too much for me right now. I think im gonna check for TC Eletronics Konnekt 8 cuz this is more like the money im willing to spend.
Or maybe I should just stick with m-audio ozonic's integrated interface until I get money to buy a better card...

Zork, the I used to own a Konnekt 8 and I never had driver problems on a Mac. I can't comment on the PC drivers, but I'll take your word for it.
Freeflow, I think all Blue Sky systems are designed to be used with a sub..their monitors barely have any low end, but the rest of the response you get from them is very accurate for the price range. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone without a sub included, and I would still rather use almost any other monitor with enough bass as is. Just my opinion..
Getafix, I didn't mention Lynx just because I was focusing on firewire interfaces. I've heard their sound cards are very nice though..
My opinion on Firewire 400 vs. 800:
400 can handle hundreds of channels of audio and MIDI. There's more than enough bandwidth to go around for practical purposes. 800 is more suited for working with digital video and networking. It's certainly faster, but not completely necessary for working with audio.
This is getting a little off topic though..stick to the mother of all sound cards thread for interface discussion.

Well RME is pretty good & super reliable but the converters are mid-range at best.
I'm going to get a Pci interface (still deciding between Lynx & RME) then get a Lavry DA10 or Benchmark DAC1 for my D/A conversion.
For the preamps, i'm probably going to get a Grace Model M101.
So this way i'll still have the reliability of RME drivers plus much better D/A & of course pre-amps.
I have a Shure SM7B which needs a lot of gain & the FF400 pres are a bit noisy at high gain.
