Seems like the government is enganging in protective tariffs. We've got that too. Anything over 30 dollars in value, and we have to pay a fee of 10 dollars + 24% of the value to get it through customs. Shit sucks, man.

Yes, same here - 38 shekels is 10 dollars.
This will suck indeed !
Edit:
Though it will be worse here because according to this new shit, we will have to pay a 10 dollars fee on everything that is Under 50 dollars.
The current situation is that we can order up to 100 dollar without paying any fee. Only over 100 dollar we start to pay fees.

The only thing we can get through for free is books. Norway isn't part of the EU, our wages are high, but our prices are also high. That means that the gov't here wants to protect our market which otherwise would be completely crushed price-wise. A CD in the store here costs around 35 dollars.

In Serbia we have similar rule, but it doesnt apply on orders lower than 20 euros. Also this rule doesnt apply on books,cd's and medicine. For all other shipments that are over 20 euros you have to pay 20% of value because customs.

Here it's like 25 more or less.
A big part of the problem for me is that most of the music I order from abroad can't be found in Israel. |

That sounds exorbitant! $10 fee on anything up to $50? I hope this changes before it comes into effect.
If it does go through, it may be best to find a compromise. Possibly download lossless/high-quality MP3 from file shares and donate to the artist? Not the same as holding the CD in your hand, but it saves you paying almost double the price due to the import fees. :/

Yes, hopefully this shit will not come into effect, as I really don't want to stop buying CDs and other stuff from abroad. Indeed the digital option is not the same, and as a music lover and collector yourself TechMonkey I'm sure you understand how much this will suck if it will indeed come into effect.

Ya. I totally understand. I would be _pissed_. This seems like it would affect enough people to where a lot of people would be writing the gov't to voice their disagreement. The links were all in Hebrew. Does the article explain why they are imposing these fees?

Yes, it does. But you can read a very short article in English about it here:

This doesn't seem like a tariff to me. Tariff's usually denote that a country is trying to protect a commodity being manufactured in their country from it's price being undermined by a foreign market. It's more like a VAT tax where value is being added to the commodity purely for the reason that it allows the government to dip its dirty little fingers into whatever they want. By far the most pernicious of any form of questionable taxation.
