I am just about to install my workstation from scratch and I have difficulties in deciding what kind of setup I do. I intend to put Win7 64-bit and already tested it, it appears to work with my M-Audio FW1814 interface and Ableton Live.
I have 2x 1TB drive, 1x 160GB and 1x 120GB, and just bought 2x 2TB which I might have option to return still if I do it fast.
I have Asus P5LD2 motherboard that has Intel Matrix Storage RAID, I suppose you could use part of a HD pair for mirroring (RAID 1) and part for striping (RAID 0) if you wish.
I also have a laptop and my main backup method is to synchronize music projects with Synctoy between laptop and workstation. This I do practically every day. Of course when projects are finished, I backup them and archive to DVD disks. But in addition to this I don't know which is the best setup. I could use 2TB drive as an external backup drive in USB casing or that is my plan. And probably put both 1TB drives to workstation. But RAID 1 or not, hard question.
As I am mirroring projects to laptop, most of my important data is mirrored anyway, so does RAID 1 bring any added value then? I am also afraid of that if one harddisk gets corrupt, the corrupted data will be mirrored to the other disk, so not a replacement for backing up.
And maybe two ordinary hard disks would bring some performance advantage if you put sample libraries to the other disk...?
Good suggestions?

What I am also afraid is that if you do a RAID array, how can you monitor the condition of the disks as Windows sees it just as an array? Once it happened to me when I had RAID (0) that one of the harddisks went broken and it was almost impossible to track the cause of the problems before I broke the array, attached the hard disk to another computer and run HD diagnosis application there. I mean it would be nice to be able to run check for bad sectors for separate hard disks of the array, but is this possible?
