i just checked, the a 3000 has nice specs. seems to be a cool unit.
i sometimes think about a hardware sampler, but always come to the conclusion that i better save the money for a nice laptop, that will do all sampling then.. |

yeah, a nice laptop will certainly give you more bang for a buck nowerdays than a sampler. i was talking more of a situation where you have a few bucks to spend and don't know what to do with it
btw:
there are also upgraded models: the a 4000 and the a 5000. i'd recommend the a 5000 cause it has a bigger display. the a 3000's one is so small that it can't display waveforms so all sample editing is done by ear (which is actually cool cause you're training and using your ears instead of your eyes!).

I regularly see the big akai´s for sale for around 500 EUR here and i do miss the sampler days a bit (not the editing part though!!!) It is almost at a point where i would be able to integrate one fully with my daw with compensation for latency. I lost a lot of umphh and channel separation going from HW samplers to software ones. At the time the added convenience really won me over, but they still have a lot to learn from the oldies. I would very much like an S6000 fully decked with adat and ak-sys card and i would be a happy camper. (alternatively a Z-8 although it´s definitively more toylike) maybe someday in the future.......And you´re right sampling as we understand it has gone the way of the dodo almost. There is something immediate about a box like this that computers do not yet convey to me. Just using samplers people made much of the music that broke down new territory during my childhood and adolescence. Now we live in an age where sampling is in everybody´s hands and never has the output been this unimaginative and bland. (in other areas new ground is still being gained, but as far as creative sampling goes hmmmmm) burnt friedman and atom heart spring to mind as exceptions to bland sample work.

I am still doing alot of sampling here , at the moment its my prime focus in studio.. Currently using the Roland v-synth, roland sp-555, akai mpc500, elektron machinedrum uw.. routing signals via different analog filters and stuff yield good results. Its interesting how many variations ( near infinite) are possible out of a single sound source!... Sampling is an art .One to mention who has been doing excessive sampling in the past is Amon Tobin...

a friend still have the mpc2000 and i was thinking to get it back and use it for my drums and then record them in the daw, do you think there is benefits for the sound? the convertion is probably crap it could have some magic who know.. |

Samplers impart a certain characteristic to the sound you put. The the 2000 mpcs have different converters from say the 1000, 4000, 2500... Many people swear by the older Mpc60 or the 2000xl cuz of their raw gritty converters. I like writing some sequences on the mpc and import into my DAW later track by track to final editing, its good for small sequences then big ones. I have really come to like this sound on the mpc and comin from a pc to such a small display isnt very intuitive but the limitations are cool to come out with some nice sequences. Rite now man i wouldnt get an mpc for drum sequences cuz it lacks lots of features , rather get a Machindrum uw or the new Octatrack from Elektron comin soon is a jaw dropper.

the big advantage (for me) of the MPC over the machinedrum is that you can play notes non-quantised with it. also the grid editing helps a lot to keep the big picture when moving certain hits back and forth to meet the grooving spot..
if you want to make more eleborate rythms and grooves with the machinedrum you need to creatively use many tricks and workarounds, but that's the charm of the elektrons. only 16 tracks at once, that might be a problem for some.
one has to get the octatrack for non-quantised sequencing.. ;-)
i owned the MPC 1000 with jjos and liked it very much (for some things), but if i had the need of one more hw-sequencer with sampling, i think i chose the octatrack. |

well you can also sequence the notes on the machinedrum with no quantize but not the machindrum but in another sequencer , its not exactly what u want but its a workaround - the parameter locks
