if you find something else to keep that space filled and the mix to push like when the hats are on, then why not .. but it wont work the same imho

What is it about the hihat sound that people like so much?

Why not ride cymbal, tambourine, jingle bell, wood block, claves...?

Well I remember one time I heard a dj set without any rythm during 1 hour... bit boring.... HH, Snare must be in a trax. You could do without but it's like spinal tap of the trax. It's a Techno law!           Nia KOR

How many times you've sat at a drum kit and never felt like playing the hi-hat? Even if its just me left leg playing the hat pedal, I need some tinglingling ting top end in my beats.

I think that timbre of sound is necessary. Sure you could use something else that sounds like a hihat, but what's the point of that really? I've used ankle bells in place of a hat and did some transient shaping, results were meh.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
