i guess you could start from scratch in Adobe Photoshop. (there is a program called 'Gimp' that is similar and free, but very unstable.) |

I think that the combination of the programs is the key. A good combination of adobe photoshop end a 3d program like 3d studio , bryce or maya can give very good results.
In my opinion a good knowledge of photoshop and its filters is the best thing for start.
If you are good to make artwork with pen and paper its even better
