Ugh I like some noise but Merzbow makes me want to cut off my ears and solder my eyes shut.
And I consider myself tolerant to most forms of electronica.

Most good noise artists are using densely layered harmonic distortion. Which is usually way more interesting to listen to than noise. Noise is well noise....random...which doesn't give much to grab hold of. I enjoy the sound of the ocean, which is something akin to complexly filtered white noise. Technical speaking. But what is technically noise and what gets categorized noise are two different things.

thanks for all the responses, folks. pretty much as i expected, there are people who want/need a beat, and then, as i had hoped, there were a couple psyheads who appreciate it. that's why i suggested that it might be interesting to have a harsh noise room *in addition* to a main floor and chillout, sometime. no one would have to be subjected to it who didn't want to be. but i promise i'd be there, instead of in the chillout. of course, the chances of any promoter doing this or allowing it to happen are, i guess, very very low [if you want a noise room at your party, i'll be happy to curate! ]
let me pimp some of my homeboys, while i'm here, for people who do like the noise. malleable records http://www.malleablerecs.com/ has just started putting out some fraction of the philly noise scene. the compilation, technicolor hell, is a nice snapshot of that scene, about a year ago. and i'd point people in particular to mincemeat or tenspeed http://www.myspace.com/mincemeatortenspeed whose totally awesome all-analog layered polyrhythms are something people with very different tastes can get behind.
and, btw, for those people mentioning bastard noise/john wiese, he is playing in philly on 9.15 with a bunch of my friends and some other touring artists. http://www.bowerbird.org |

The only time I listen to noise is when it is made by hand-made (home-made) instruments...
I Also like it when Dark Psychedelic Producers spin noise...
I heard some sick shit from Primordial Oooze at E-Dance 2008.
Sometimes that slow baseline made me smile!!! |

In NY there is the No Fun Fest. Its been held at The Hook (Hello BK) for quite a while now. Apparently its a big deal. Like all the big people in that scene play and its 3 days. I used to work outside at that place selling food and I had to work it a few times. Not my cup of tea. Sometimes its cool but I can't take that most of it has No beat. But the people are cool and they sell cool shit downstairs. http://nofunfest.com/
I guess its in williamsburg now.Whoa Sonic outh is going to be there! I would go see them.

I don't listen to noise intentionally but I can appreciate what people are doing in that space and believe there is some significance there. I can also understand the reactions of people here (probably more done for internet comedy than actual discussion, but whatever that's what makes the internet entertaining and fun!).
I've been at festivals where there's been an experimental noise stage (usually hidden off somewhere). I actually had an alt area at a party I threw back in the day with nothing but noise, drone, and soundscaping. The kids that got to share their stuff were stoked because they never have a venue otherwise as most are bedroom experimenters (this was around 96 when you couldn't disseminate your creations so easily online). And the people at the party dug having a space to get away from the hard pounding beats of the hot sweaty main room.
I think it's relevant to be honest. Psychedelic, by definition, is mind expanding. Noise explores the chaos of formlessness to discover new possibilities that wouldn't arise within already known frameworks. That's psychedelic.
I think it's cool to have a space, off the beaten path, where these sorts of things can be explored. Done with the right intention at the right time of day, it could even be integrated into a chill, and main space.
I find if people understand what you are trying to accomplish then they are more likely to be receptive to giving it a chance. It's all just an experience. I wouldn't try to force it on people in a clumsy, unexpected manner though. That'd be bound to fail. |

I like noise. In its many forms. I was really enraptured by many of the 'noise' industrial acts from the '80s..Illusion of Safety, Torcher Chorus, Neubauten, etc. Check out Kim Cascone's 'Statistically Improbable Phrases' (http://store.anechoicmedia.com/)...i feel he was integral to trance music in the early nineties....now 'noise'.
Obviously noise invites many challenges...that for me are welcome. A noise room at trance party would be nice, but would certainly require fair warning.
As pointed out earlier in this thread, some 'noise' musicians present their work as soothing white noise, while others produce un-adulterated screaming/banging/clamorous/piercing....noise. it would be cool to present both extremes...

i was playing with a sorta futuristic experimental pop-punk band and we got booked to open for wolf eyes haha. I like noise or dislike noise just as much as any other music it all depends on what the piece does for me some noise is awful like it was stated before makes you wanna solder your ears shut. Didnt merzbow release a cd inside of a concrete block or something? anyway so the other act at this show was a guy who looked like danzig and came out infront of 2 full stack pa speakers with a microphone and a peice of cellophane. he went at it smahing various parts of his body with the microphone then smashed it into the cellophane etc till after 30 minutes or so he walked off only to do an encore for about ten with a new no broken mic. I like noises but i cant at this point listen to anything that will promote stress mental fragmentation and will intentionally pain my ears. but yes soothing noise is interesting too me the absolute lack of rules is attractive. Although the lack of rules is just a disguise for the rules embedded in a seemingly ruleless activity. example being the rule is no rules so if there are no rules you can use anything you want as long as it doesnt sound like what it was before you. So synths are out melodies. ITs just like having the rules inverted right becomes wrong etc. if it sounds right you have to make it wrong somehow.

+1
... and how lucid!
For something uncharacteristically soothing check out Richard Pinhas & Merzbow's album "Keio Line." Get the CD and NOT the 3xLP which is a fucked up pressing. |
