I got myself a Alpha Juno 2, which I traded for my An1x.
Never had something 'analog', so I was pretty curious to hear what it was all about.
Well I can't say I'm THAT impressed though.
But maybe it's got to do with it's rather basic functions, Dco's and the fact it's filter resonance can't go all the way.
(And I thought my Nord Rack 2 was limited )
But that doesn't mean I'm not gonna keep it for a while.
So I was wondering if there's any more trancers on here who have 1 out of the Juno series?
If so, maybe we can exchange some ideas of how to get the most out of the unit.
I think it will do nice on chunky basslines, and I was able to make that 'Psy squelch' with it
But what else does the Juno really well, thinking into the direction of Psytrance related sounds?

i don't own a juno, but from time to time i get serious gas for a juno 6 or 60, just for them being classical synths. though i won't get one, they are too big and i don't really need it (i hope ;-)).
have you tried a nice arpeggio with pulse, lfo to pwm, speed as you wish, resonance up if you want, move cutoff up and down, into delay and reverb? should sound very 'goaish'.
i'm sure they are also capable of a nice wobble bass.
square, lfo to filter-mod, no resonance.
and maybe the resonance is strong enough to get a goa kick out of it? (but i don't know this!)
ohh.. they are famous for their chorus, so don't forget to use it. |

I just sold my Alpha Juno yesterday.
Yes, the sound of pure oscilators is nice, but I got irritated by just ONE filter - lopass, no self-resonance and stupid envelopes.
I used it for pads mostly.
Here are some ideas:
- use it as a sound source and open filter all the way, then put some other vst or hardware filter on it
- use lots of effects to change timbre
- sample the pure waveforms and use in samplers or resample
- as said before, use chorus
- open release of envelopes all the way and play any sequence, thep play with filter - you get an ambiental wash of sound
- sell it and get something better! |

i had a juno 106 on loan in my studio for a while once.
nice synth that has many classic sounds that were used in the 80's hits good, warm sound. not very ballsy though. nice is the word.

The Juno Alpha is a pain to program, but is THE synth for the hoover bassline sound.
Nothing to do with the Juno 6/60/106.
Had the Juno 60 (midi retrofitted) for a couple of years. Loved it!
Peace out.

Well I have this wonderful looking editor for the Juno which makes editing a breeze.
Although since yesterday for some reason my Juno isn't responding to any changes I make with the editor.
Anyway, thanks all for your input.
Can't really say it's motivated me alot into keeping this synth
But I think it's still nice for filter sweeping pads and although it doesn't have a an arp built in, I think it I will definitely give it a spin with some external arp triggering the synth.
See what that brings.
To acid drive: what would be the next step up for an analog synth, whilst not being a lot more expensive?
I was thinking towards something like an Akai AX-80, Roland JX-10 (which is a lot more expensive), Korg DW-8000, or maybe I should just save up for a x0xb0x |

That looks like a nice little synth to have, although a bit out of my range.

Well Djones in that price range there aren't many analogue synths. Also, old analogue synths need maintenance and often quit on you when you most need them. Though, they do sound warmer and stand distinct in the mix. Alpha Junos on the other hand, never die.
Maybe consider waiting till you save a bit more money. Or consider VA synths like virus, microkorg or nord lead. Can't say from your post what is it you are looking for - monosynth or polysynth. Here are some
Roland JUNO-106 - res. lopass and hipass - voice chips dying all the time - nice sound - different beast compered to Alpha series
Dave Smith Mopho - just lopass, mono
Waldorf Pulse or Pulse + - just lopass, mono
Korg Poly-800
Roland MC 202 or SH 101 (prices now reasonable where I live and fall a just a bit over your range)
Roland JX-8P
Korg PolySix
