As in 2005 with their second album, the Kiwi wonderboys Storm brothers internationally known as Antix/Fiord decided to give their last installment, “Wanderer”, released at Iboga last June, a second lease on life. The result is a 12 track rmx album in the wake of a gigantic tour which took them around the world in the last few months. Remixers were chosen by the Duo from some of the usual suspects featured in the previous rmx album (Beckers, Vibrasphere, Nyquist/Freq). But also among them are some of the hottest producers of the moment, coming from different horizons, —sometimes from their homeland New Zealand, which is not so quiet as one might think— but with more connections between them than it might appear at first glance. Hence the strong unity of this new album.

1. FM Radio Gods is a trio from Montreal comprising Andrew (Lucid), Ali (Otash) and Tao-Nhan (DJ Tao). Stemming from diverse musical backgrounds, the trio has released so far a blend of retro pop, modern pumping electro and infectious club rhythms. Here they join forces with Cold Groove label manager Jeremy R. Their arrangement features a transposed and lightly distorted bass à la Beckers which works wonders and evokes the bluesy electroish atmosphere of the original, with the addition of distant female voice samples. It’s a perfect opening that immerses you in the atmosphere of Antix’s original but shifts its focus towards a colder but nonetheless effective groove.

2. For the second track, the much sought-after Franck Beckers (with countless single hits and a standout album) is again on rmx duty. The German groove master picked up Blew, the fastest track from Wanderers, and has woven one of his trademark, irresistible, transposed rhythmic sections to what was a kind of guitar riff now transformed into a staccato, techy lead that makes the piece sexy and groovy as hell. The funky and shuffled vocal snippets endow quirky twists to this dance-floor magnet. Hands up!

3. Aussie producer Aran Gallagher, better known as Freq, conducts, under his Nyquist moniker, the 2nd rmx of Seven Seas. The electro mood is set right from the intro, yet the development brings a nice blend of pounding clubby house rhythms of the best metal, alternating with the melancholic mood of the original, still quite present in the break, with more rapturous feelings. Another dancefloor-friendly dj tool.

4. The baton remains in Aussie hands as the concert continues with Vapour/Vapourize head honcho and DJ extraordinaire Kasey Taylor, who dubs the 2nd edit of Seven Seas. Right from the first kick you will recognize his signature chunky groove, spiced up with tight clicky beats. Only fragments of a furtive, serpentine, arpeggiated motif together with more ominous sounds recall the original, now tinged with trancey pads. Yet another precious prog-house banger that is meant to fill the dance floors. Thumbs up!

5. Beauty and the Beat are Plastik Park and Sprout labels’ DJs, Sally Doolaly and Goetzlich her partner in life, who have an impressive curriculum vitae under the belt as internationally acclaimed troubadours. They’ve teamed up together with their usual conspirator Nuke and have made a name for themselves with nice remixes signed at Tribal Vision records. They deliver here another interpretation of Seven Seas, which contrasts quite clearly with the above-mentioned! It’s more fully-fledged electro with twisted transposed effects and zesty acid flavours. Another tasty cracker!

6. Hyzer, a new moniker for Trance’s famous Vibrasphere, gives Circades a very different, much more laid back perspective. The original was the most danceable piece of the initial album which the Antix duo so often used to start off their live sets during their last tour. Hyzer makes it more atmospheric, elongating a transposed base line, and adding trademark Vibrasphere arrangements. No real surprise here.

7. Matthieu Delepau, better known for his solo project D-Sens, as being one head of Lunaspice, as the founder of the Arcadia festival, and more recently of his label Bus records, may be considered one of France’s foremost Prog activists. Inspired by BHD’s rattle sounds, he echoes them with some minimal-tech percussive treatment, offset by spooky arpeggios running along the track which change the mood of the original in an interesting way, especially after the first break. In the context of the recent tracks he’s signed for Iboga, I tend to prefer the rmx he’s made for BBE, but it’s still a fine piece.

8. Cyril Orson from France, label manager and founder of Bootik records, and Matt Drake are two renowned and experienced DJs in the electronic scene in NZ. Their reworking of Flock is quite amazing as the original is almost unrecognizable! They give a light electro twist that is nontheless shaded by large melancholic echoing pads, but that still manages to address the hips of discerning listeners.

9. Solead is a duo composed of Charles Michaud, also known on the full-on scene as Tripych, and Vincent Courcot, aka Motion. The French wizards are on fire these days, with intense discographic activity irradiating from downunder: take a look at what these guys have released at Aussie labels such as Subsonic or Kasey Tayor’s Vapour, from which a track has been taken up by John Digweed’s Transitions 3 at Renaissance. This 2nd rmx of BHD is all about the thumping techno beats that they are exploring these days, shimmy-shaking with cheeky twists. Given this recent output, it is arguably not their finest track to date, but still ranks up there as an excellent demonstration of sonic sorcery.

10 Simon Flower is another artist from the Techno scene in NZ, active since the early 90s, who’s been releasing tracks on his own label Nurture, as well as on labels such as Moon Harbour, Dessous, Curl Curl or recently on the renowned Poker Flat. This reworking goes deep into atmospheric techno vibes with large soaring pads and a nice emotional tinge. Choice!

11. Next is BHD’s third reworking – and this is quite a radical one! – signed by Headhunter, a Bristol based Dubstep producer, signed at Tempa records. His background is quite original as, unlike most Dubstep artists who have?emerged from drum and bass and garage, Headhunter's soundscape stems from listening to Techno and Progressive Trance. What remains of the original is finely arranged with a subterranean bass and strong percussive punctation. Definitely a great idea to insert such a track in this compilation.

12. As an album closer, the Strom brothers have enrolled old time DJ, sonic explorer and producer Jamie Newman from NZ, whose research lead to the creation of an original musical project named Arch Hill Volunteers. AHV incorporates different acoustic instruments and talented vocalists in an original fusion of styles described as “soulful upside down beat”. Little of the beautiful original track survives in this trip hop edit. But it does the trick pretty well and works as teaser for what’s cooking in their forthcoming release.

Bottom Line
This is a great CD showcasing what best characterizes Antix’s music: openness (the CD covers an impressive range of music, from progressive to electronica, and versions of the same track are so different that you don’t mind having them twice – or even thrice! – as they are in no way redundant); generosity (12 tracks !), and catchy atmospheres. It brings precious reinterpretations to the original album, and provides top-notch DJ tools that some might have missed in the original. It delivers some of the finest forward thinking sound around, and should give those who have proved impervious to these trends a valuable introduction to what’s going on in the progressive genre. Compared to the previous rmx album, “Wandering” has raised the standard to the state of the art. Given that the CD comes with an interesting film focusing on Antix’s tour in America, and a nice editorial notice, this is simply a must-have album!

I have to say I am not satisfied from the remix album of antix. The thing is their new style is much deeper and minimalistic, and most of the remixes are usual electro house music which does not go with the original works. Simon Flower and Solead remixes are really nice, also those two downbeats.           Music is the only language that come very close to silence (OSHO)

great review Aden. Bang on the point.

Just a little edit... track 4 and 5 are remixes of Red Robin and not Seven Seas.
