Artist : Antix
Title : Manta EP
Label : Iboga records
Format : digital download Mp3/Wave
Release date : 9 feb. 2010

Tracklist :
1. Antix : Manta (original mix)
2. Antix : Manta (Beckers remix)
3. Antix : The Hoard (Tim Richards)

In a different vein to their two recent releases, « Manta » brings the lush atmospheres of the 07 « Wanderer » album back up to the surface. Expect deep, dreamy and misty soundscapes, but also distant pop accents as can be heard in the reverberated male singing that recalls the elegance of a Bryan Ferry. Miming the gracious flight of the manta ray, this track swells and soars, drifts and floats, and shakes and shuffles along captivating beats that emanate from a softer-than-usual rhythmic combo using filtered snare and a transposed bassline interwoven with pungent bluesy leads. Another emotion stirring piece which insinuates its way into you the more you listen to it. A typically intense piece of music, bearing all the hallmarks of the high standard of production that characterizes the Strom brothers studio work. This is the third enticing preview we’ve had of the upcoming artist album – the fourth one – which promises to be a masterpiece.

Beckers’ rather stripped back rendition hinges on a distorted, purring, meandering, sinuous bassline, somewhat similar to one that he signed for a Magitman remix. Once again, he demonstrates his knack in that department. This gives the remix a more driving approach, backed up by offset percussion arrangements, clearly aimed at the dancefloor. And yet, the break just before the fifth mn recycles large bits of the original’s emotionally dense, rhythmically tense final melodic development. The result is an original hybrid of styles, a blend of progressive and techy elements, which definitely has class and allure, while also substantially departing from the two massive groovers and stompers he has reworked for the Kiwi wonderboys up until now.

The 3rd offering on this release was from the previous Antix EP entitled the « Hoard ». It’s signed by Auckland’s award winning DJ, music promoter and producer Tim Richards, who can boast the support of some of the big wigs of the scene, with releases on such labels as Curfew, Dieb Audio, Kinky, Defected, and so on. He has also collaborated in different forms with artists like Infusion, King Unique, Luke Walker, and Rob Mooney. And he’s familiar with the brothers’ production, having remixed Triangle (their project with Cyril Orson), and will be featured on an upcoming Fiord EP. In this addition to the Manta EP, he delivers a pounding Tech-House version of « the Hoard » in which very little has been kept from the orginal, but nonetheless enough to remain distinctive. The melodic side of the original has been swapped for a powerful rhythm section highlighting percussion flourishes, layered with a vocal sample from the seminal piece. A nice alternative to the other versions released.

Intelligent beats, captivating atmospheres and original groove describe this new offering from Iboga. The original mix and Beckers’ reworking have my preference. What a way to start the new year for Iboga! My grateful applause.
