if you are changing phase events between the R L channels in order to excite the stereo field - I suggest you do that on a seperate channel, and leave the other channel either mono or simply panned.
When listening to the result on a mono speaker system - anti phase probs would be almost unnoticed.

copy a audiotrack and phaserev it, then pan them out to L and R... and then you will broaden the "picture"...

I can't find the article, but waves suggest to avoid hitting the anti phase for longer than 3 seconds with an individual sound.
I really tried to find the article but wasn't able to do so.
