Basic synth is preety much useless, but some people make mods to it which are pretty simple because this thing is pretty simple as well.
Those mods are seriously amazing.

The filter is worth the cash alone...although from what I have read so far there is no midi/usb to sequence things from the computer + the output is noisy.

This is just a few steps above the stylophone IMO but.....
I´d really like to see these toys being cracked open in schools by kids teaching them basic electronics in a more fun way than constructing traffic light circuits and other dull stuff. Even for my tiny fingers this is a bit on the small side though. The simple construction makes it easy to understand analog synthesis from a circuit perspective and modding is relatively easy (korg did not make it hard at all) It does remain a toy that is a far cry from the days of old. Nonetheless if i had a kid this would be an obvious gift (synths have adjustable volume, drumkits do not)

maybe those are a nice addition to the monotron.
Should be fun to do a live show with just small synthy toys!

the board inside has a shit load of mod points and trace hacks labbled
defo a toy but surprisingly fat and dirty sound
Gakken is a pretty cool beginner synth kit as well

Here's their newest gadget the Monotribe, seems like a much better toy than the Monotron, but apparently they still forgot put midi in the damn thing:

they already have this thing called the nebulophone:
currently assembling the stepped tone generator from the same guys.
thingamagoop is next it uses an arduino board so hopefully it'll be a step towards creating something from scratch.
highly recommend bleep labs, the parts come numbered, instructions are very clear, great way to get started and in the process you get to know how it all works very systematically.
