Hey there,

I cant figure out how to sidechain something with my kick, when the kick stops playing.

In another thread I did read about ghost kicks, sounded great.

I just tried it, but with no success. When I create just an empty MIDI track and copy my Kick blocks into it, I cant choose the same inserts as I do on the output channels of my other things, and I dont know how to just create a stereo-out for that channel.

I also tried to create an instrument channel, cause I remembered that I can choose my inputs there like on the others. But there the sidekick plugin wont send anything out...probally because that ghost track isnt making any output...

So, how exactly can I have my Kick-like sidechaining, without the kick actually playing?

create a kick channel (the ghost), put a midi sequence that triggers the kick throughout the tune, even when your audible kick, stops playing. send the ghost kick to a buss (say buss 10), and make sure the buss output is not routed to the master output since you don't want your ghost kick to become audible.
then insert a compressor at the bottom of the chain of whatever channel you want to drop the gain at every (ghost) kick trigger and select buss 10 as the sidechain input.

that is all.

i forgot to mention that I use Cubase 5.1.

My problem is: How do i create that ghost track?

If I just add an empty MIDI track, then I cannot select my sidechain plugin(sidekick) as insert. i can only selcet that at the inserts of my "stereo-out" channels.

fuck knows mate, I'm on Logic 8. If your compressor allows you to select Cubase's buss as an input, my way or working in Logic, should also work for you.

I'm sure some Cubase chaps would know the trick.

Is your kick audio, or MIDI? If it's MIDI you'll have to set up another instance of the kick drum (ie. another pad in Battery going to a separate output which you turn down, or another instance of Bazzism etc.) driven by the ghost MIDI track you've created. Then copy your kick MIDI parts onto the ghost track and put the Sidekick or whatever on the outputs of the ghost kick synth.

If your kick is audio you just need to duplicate the track and stick Sidekick etc. on it.

Ah, thanks a lot!

My Kick is MIDI(sample in Kontakt) and by just copying the track it did not create the coressponding output channel where I can set the sidechain plugin.
Got it now
