I'm just about finished on this one, the 2nd track in just a few months. This one is MUCH more melodic than the first one I posted, and much more old-skool with the filtered sawtooth lead etc. It's a little bit dark and trippy tho. Reminds me of Hallucinogen's old stuff. (I'm not worthy!)

Let me know what you think!

Wow.. so few views, let alone comments!

Has anyone even listened to it? I know there's a lot of good stuff to choose from in this forum but this track kicks ass! It's worth a listen! Especially if you like the oldschool melodic stuff!

PS Just updated it with a more punchy bass.

I realllllly really like the melodies and the chord progressions and the general story alot...
But
The production needs to be better for you get the best out of this track
I can't feel the kick properly and the bass is too much in the background for me to feel the groove as well as i should... Also percussion sounds very unoriginal... try to use some different more interesting sounds and work on the EQ and more tweaking...

I really think you should work on the production because i really do feel it is a great track... very emotional and lovely lovely flowing melodies
I want the production to do justice to that sound though

Peace!
Keep tweaking and i can't wait to hear the next one !

Good ambience and nice flowing...
The bass as nikc said in did need an improvement...
I liked the lead sound...even if it was used in 3001 other trax... style the old memory )))

Good luck in future,
F.

Thanks for the comments!

Just wondered, did you listen to it before or after I updated the bass? I did clean up the production somewhat, too.

I don't know what you're listening on, but the kick sounds fine to me, I tried it with my hi-fi speakers (gallo nucleus solo & reference), some bose nearfield monitors (which have crappy bass!) and 2 sets of studio quality earphones/headphones... Sony MDR-77 and Shure E3.

If that's not working right I may have to invest in some balanced studio monitors.

Now It's updated, I'd love to hear some more comments! Anyone who liked the oldschool screamy sawtooth lead and Hallucinogen/InfectedMushroom melodies should like this, even if it's not the "usual" fast-paced psy-tech that seems to be prevalent on this forum.

Hah.. the guys over at KVR forums loved it, anyway!

Boom!

i think the melody is great, it really does justice to the old goa tracks, it makes me think of infected mushroom's "devil" track and goa gil tracks.. what did you use to create this sound?

but like everyone else said.. the bass is just too boring. the melody is really good, but try to add some more fx and a harder bass, harder ans sharper. the thing is, if you said to me that this was some tracks made years back by some artist like goa gil or astral projection i would have believed you.. it sounds authentic. but we're just too spoiled by all the fat bass lines in modern psy tracks that this just doesn't do on the dance floor anymore. try to combine this old sound with a newer sound and a more aggressive full on beat and you've got yourself a fantastic song in my opinion

Thanks for the comment.

The sound is from Synth1 - patch "Acid Lead" (basically a sawtooth with resonant filter)

.. piped through a heavy metal type overdrive with stereo delay, then EQd to get rid of the treble and give it a guitar-amp sound.

I appreciate your comments on the bass. Most of the music I listen to these days has very simple monotone bass, which I prefer over the rapid-fire arpeggio bass used in most of the recent psy-tek isreali stuff. I agree though it does seem a bit weak overall.

Do you have any tips on how I might get a more powerful sounding bass? What's a good synth/setting to use to start with? I can't seem to pin one down on my synths that sounds powerful without having too much 'signature'.

again nice melodic prog track! you have a good feeling for it, now with an extra goa oldstyle flavour (i'm a fan )
as for the bass, you could get it stronger along the track, starting as is and developing to something with more "finger" and more solid... compression and EQ can do the trick. As for bass sounds, i'm a very addicted Reason subtractor fan just can't leave it to try the new VST's

ok, i listened to your track again a couple of times, and i just wanted to say that i do think it's great! actually, i love it! it just has this certain feeling to it which makes it wonderful, these goa tracks just seem to be a bit more mysterious than regular psytracks, those psytrance tracks really know how to get you all hyper, but goa tracks just give you this weird sort of creepy feeling, dance for the devil or something like that. you're dancing and your friends (but also strangers) laugh at you when they pass and you dance with them, then move on.. as if the dance floors turns into some kind of conspiracy, in a good way of course. i'm not sure about the bass, but i advise you to listen closely to some 'fractal glider' songs, they have kick ass goa melodies combined with dry but exciting basslines that give you the feeling that the song could just keep going on and on but it'll still stay great. if you could combine this melody of yours with a more intense bass i could definately go crazy when this song would be played on the dance floor.

all in all the bassline doesn't even need a lot of work in my opinion, it's just that it should come forward a bit more.. maybe by reducing the melody's volume.. then, when you turn up the volume of your speakers after that the bass and melody will be more of a complete package i think.

OK final version here:

Maybe the EQ's not perfect, and for a proper release I'd have to remix it to be longer I think, but I'm spending more time on new stuff, unless someone really wants to release it

Hi lindseyp.
I have listen to you track and I really think taht you have to work more in the eq and the mix...the lead melody is very nice, but it sounds to loud and scratchy.
It`s a nice production, but you have to work a lot in the sound.

Keep it up.
Cheers!

The lead is way too high, taking up the whole soundpicture...
lower it...

most often there is just a problem of balance between the elements... everything needs to be heard during the whole track,(and you need to choose the focal point) use volume automation for sections where something gets lost or if something gets to high..

first volume, then EQ... but rather check sound source before EQ......
