Review:
A very fine album from one-time Orb collaborator, Mr. Tom Green. He created this as a soundtrack for late morning post-club chilling, but the album turned out to be so much more. This landmark composition helped establish the genre of "organic electronica" that encompasses most modern ambient and downtempo. "Another Fine Day" is delicious, understated music with a subtle power to shift mood, and invoke plateaus of deep feeling, calm and relaxation.
The melodies and sounds on this album conjure up feelings of water, as suggested by the cover photo of undersea life, and the title: "Life Before Land". There are sparkling thumb pianos, live double bass, with soothing electronic washes and lots of nature sounds mixed up with impressive stereo processing. It's hard to believe this was made in 1994, as the production and (original) mastering sound very crisp and not the slightest bit dated. I missed the original Beyond Records release, and first heard this a couple weeks ago - but can understand why it is considered a "classic"!
Tempo and Energy:
While the opening track is a gentle ambient- dub track with bass lines and percussion, it dips and smoothes into gentler ambience from there on out - until the two remixed bonus tracks at the end. This trip feels warm and full of graceful, blossoming spring and summer feelings. Expansive, floating ambience for the morning time. Behind closed eyelids I see delicate sea creatures and colorful tropical fish swimming about - illuminated by powerful rays of bright, clear sun light.
