Hello all
I just bought a new laptop from a friend. The hard drive was reformatted and Vista was reinstalled through a 3rd party backup program. I have changed the identity of the PC from his name to mine. The identity shows up correctly in all cases except for the prompter that asks me for my user name and company. The defaults it gives me in the program installation prompts are always defaulting under his name. I want it to be under mine, that is, the prompts to recognize my ID over his.
How do I change this?

The hard drive was reformatted - This means no data would survive from the previous owner.
A 3rd Party backup program? So in effect, its not a clean install of Vista, it's an image.
If your friend was prompted to make this image when he first bought the laptop, then his credentials are embedded somewhere on it.
That's the only way I can see that his info has survived a format.
Um.. you'll have to edit the registry.. But it's at your own risk.
The Owner and Organization are stored in the Registry, under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
The values are called "RegisteredOwner" and "RegisteredOrganization".
Run regedit as administrator, navigate to the RegisteredOwner value, and
double-click to modify it. Change it to your desired value. Repeat for
RegisteredOrganization. Click OK and exit Regedit. Reboot |

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for.
I had to do something similar once before with regedit on an old laptop to correct the install path for vst plugins, but I had forgotten how to do it. Muchos gracias
