Artist : Animaltek
Title : Pasdue
Label : Flow Vinyl
Format : Digital EP (Mp3 & wave)
Release date : March 3, 2009

Tracklist:
1/ Pasdue (original mix)
2/ Pasdue (Fiord rmx)
3/ Pasdue (Remute rmx)

NYC-based Techno producers Animaltek comprises Oleg Slepak and Shay Raban (aka DJ Earthian). They earned instant recognition from the Techno scene with their debut EP, back in 2007, earning massive support from big name Djs such as both Digweeds, Satoshi Tomie or Anthony Pappa. This acknowledgement led to several follow-ups at distinguished discographic institutions such as the Cologne-based labels WIR and Treibstoff. Their subtle rhythmic construction, original orchestration, often dark atmosphere and sense of track evolution also seduced some hotly-tipped names associated with the Trance scene such as Antix (remixed by Animaltek for Iboga), Perfect Stranger (who included the duo in some of his charts & mixes), or Solead (who has remixed one of their tracks for an up-coming release). Now it is Flow’s turn to release an EP. Let’s check this out.

1. Pasdue (original)
The original mix is a deep, dark, glitchy, and syncopated Techno piece that will evoke a lysergic soundscape with all kinds of conversing animal gurgles around a pond at night, alternately rattling, and undulating, and interrupted only by a spooky male voice sample. In that respect it is approriately labelled animal techno. If you like your techno mentally twisted, this one will be an instant favourite.

2. Pasdue (Fiord rmx)
The first remix comes courtesy of Fiord, the once Electro-House, now Techno side-project of the Strom brothers, also widely known as Antix. Aficionados have already become accustomed to the duo’s affinity with dark Techno atmospheres in their stunning remixes of Perfect Stranger or, in the same vein, Beckers & Hatfield. This rendition throws a lot of new elements into the mix which make it a much more dance-floor minded tune yet without sacrificing the seminal piece’s overtones. The quirky sub bass tones are backed by a shaky cymbal ride, and some warmer, techy percussion beats driving things forward. The soundscape is complexified by the addition of crisp sounds from the Antix palette: their favourite crazy & filtered fx shreds up the voice sample, and the main theme gets a catchy reworking & more pronounced melodic treatment, halfway between the grotesque and the spooky registers, while the lead organically expands into a simple yet catchy little melody. As a result we get another monster track that will force the dancefloor into submission. Hats off! And watch for coming up releases : there is more hot stuff in the pipeline!

3. Pasdue (Remute rmx)
The young Hamburg-based producer Denis Karimani aka Remute is next on rmx duty. He takes the original at face value, giving it a techier and, if possible, more twisted spin. He clearly sets his sights on Detroit, reducing the polyphonic material of the original to a percussive theme and a repeated single-note pattern. The nocturnal acoustic world is given an even ghastlier dimension, with a deft eye on the dancefloor thanks to the more stomping rhythmic combo and the inclusion of classic tricks for rocking the dancefloor. Not as surprising as the other mixes. Having said that, I can certainly see its appeal.

Bottom line
Existing fans and those unfamiliar with Animaltek work will hunt down this release. A very good original coupled with two effective remixes. All three should have their moment even if Fiord definitely gets the best grade. This package has already received support from Anthony Pappa, Mashtronic, D-Nox, MOS, Kasey Taylor, and Logiztik Sounds. It will be snapped up by a plethora of DJs and avid listeners alike. Hot stuff from the Portuguese imprint!
